Speech Language Pathologist – Contingent/IRP

Department: University Hospital | Inpatient Rehabilitation Administration

Rehabilitation team members are licensed or certified professionals who work within a specific team structure to offer inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation services to patients with disorders and conditions such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, neurogenic disorders, orthopedic problems, burns, amputations, or chronic pain. These services are provided at the acute‑care hospital, the acute inpatient rehabilitation facility (Dodd Hall), or outpatient service sites. The Speech Language Pathologist reports to the rehabilitation team leaders as part of the Rehabilitation Services Division structure.

The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for assessing patients and collaborating with the team to establish comprehensive plans of care. Duties include providing a wide variety of treatment techniques, educating and supporting families, and facilitating continuing care planning. The role also involves evaluating the quality of services and participating in outcomes management activities. The Speech Language Pathologist works collaboratively with team members, patients, and other participants in patient care activities, including physicians, nurses, support staff, and Patient Care Resource Managers, to assure coordinated services and programs. The Speech Language Pathologist embraces the Intensive Caring values of the organization to guide interactions with others.

The Speech Language Pathologist will provide specialized treatments to help patients explore and identify avocational interests. Treatments include assessment of interests, introduction to various methods used to explore resources post‑discharge, exposure to local organizations, and educational material to maximize post‑discharge planning. The Speech Language Pathologist serves as the contact for community linkages and acts as a liaison for patients, staff, and consumers of Rehabilitation Services.

Minimum Qualifications

All rehabilitation team members must be licensed or certified in their respective profession and meet the educational or certification requirements established by their profession. Speech‑language pathologists must hold a license in the State of Ohio, a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC/SLP), and may have completed a Clinical Fellowship Year. All licensed professionals must be cleared through the National Database of Practitioners. Typically one to two years of experience working in a medical setting is preferred. Speech pathologists are also required to hold a master’s degree; other professions may hold bachelor’s degrees.

Maintaining professional licensure, demonstrating commitment to continuing education, meeting mandatory education and health requirements, and demonstrating competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions are essential for this position.

Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post‑offer process.
