Job summary

Charter School of the Dunes in Gary, IN is seeking a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant to support a licensed SLP in delivering services to students. Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an approved Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program.
  • Current SLPA license or certification as required by state regulations.
  • Must have 100 hour supervision certificate.
  • Knowledge of speech and language disorders and intervention techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

Job description

Job Summary

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) supports the licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in providing speech and language services to students. Under the supervision of an SLP, the SLPA implements treatment plans, documents student progress, prepares instructional materials, and assists in promoting communication skills that support students' academic and social success. The SLPA works collaboratively with teachers, families, and other educational staff while adhering to state and federal regulations governing speech-language services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Implement individualized speech and language treatment plans developed by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

  • Provide direct speech and language therapy to individual students and small groups under SLP supervision.

  • Document student performance and maintain accurate treatment records.

  • Collect data during therapy sessions to assist the supervising SLP in monitoring student progress.

  • Prepare therapy materials, activities, and equipment.

  • Assist with speech, language, fluency, voice, and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) activities as directed.

  • Support classroom carryover of communication strategies through collaboration with teachers and staff.

  • Maintain therapy spaces, materials, and equipment in an organized and safe manner.

  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and training opportunities as assigned.

  • Communicate professionally with school staff and families regarding therapy activities, as directed by the supervising SLP.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA, HIPAA (when applicable), and district policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the role of a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.


Duties Not Permitted

The SLPA shall not:



  • Conduct evaluations or interpret assessment results.

  • Develop or modify Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or treatment plans independently.

  • Diagnose speech or language disorders.

  • Discharge students from services.

  • Represent themselves as a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

  • Perform duties outside the scope of practice established by state law or ASHA guidelines.


Qualifications

Required


  • Associate's or bachelor's degree from an approved Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program.

  • Current Speech-Language Pathology Assistant license or certification as required by state regulations.

  • Must have 100 hour supervision certificate.

  • Knowledge of speech and language disorders and intervention techniques.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

  • Basic computer proficiency, including educational technology and documentation systems.


Preferred


  • Previous experience working with school-aged children.

  • Experience supporting students with autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, or AAC systems.

  • CPR and First Aid certification.


Physical Requirements


  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, and move throughout school facilities.

  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials and equipment up to 25 pounds.

  • Ability to actively engage with students during therapy sessions.


Work Environment

The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant works in school classrooms, therapy rooms, and other educational settings. The position requires regular interaction with students, staff, and families in a collaborative educational environment.
