Job Overview

Speech‑Language Pathology Assistant support the student’s ability to derive full benefits from the district’s educational program. The scope of work has impact through the Office of Teaching and Learning in the Public Schools of the District of Columbia. The Speech and Language Pathology Aide works alongside the licensed Speech‑Language Pathologist to eliminate, reduce, and/or provide compensatory strategies in the area of speech and language development.

This position is a safety‑sensitive position. As a result, throughout employment this position will be subject to the Employee Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy. The Speech‑Language Pathologist (10‑month) will report to the principal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conducts speech‑language interventions for students as directed by the supervising speech‑language pathologist, available both in‑person and online.
  • Adheres to therapy plans crafted by the speech‑language pathologist.
  • Organizes and readies therapy materials and equipment, as well as prepares for review sessions.
  • Monitors and records student advancements in achieving goals and communicates these updates to the speech‑language pathologist.
  • Provides support with documentation tasks.
  • Facilitates the transition of students from their classroom to the speech‑language therapy environment.
  • Applies behavior management strategies that align with holistic educational and engagement principles.
  • Undertakes additional responsibilities as needed.
Education and Experience Requirements

Speech‑Language Pathology Aides must meet the following Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
  • Associate’s degree or 48 college credit hours or have successfully passed the Paraprofessional Assessment administered by ETS (with a high school diploma or equivalent).
  • Experienced Speech‑Language Pathology Aide must meet the following Education and Experience Requirements: Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred DC Department of Health (DOH) licensure in speech‑language pathology assistance (SLP‑A); School‑based speech therapy experience preferred.
