Morgan County Board of Education Class Code: 7293 LOCAL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION PLAN CLASS TITLE: SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the general supervision of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), the School-Based Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) provides direct and indirect services to students with identified speech and language disorders and other disabilities. The SLPA supports the development of pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control, vocalization, and use of assistive technology for communication.

Essential Functions and Job Duties:
  • Provide direct speech and language services to students under the supervision of a licensed SLP in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Conduct speech and language screenings without interpretation, using protocols developed by the supervising SLP.
  • Follow and implement treatment plans, intervention strategies, and protocols designed by the supervising SLP.
  • Document student performance and progress toward established goals; provide written and oral updates to the supervising SLP.
  • Assist the SLP during student assessments by preparing materials, taking notes, and organizing documentation.
  • Prepare, adapt, and organize therapy materials, instructional tools, and equipment for classroom or service delivery use.
  • Support students in using assistive technology devices designed for communication
  • Maintain accurate records and data, including tally sheets, graphs, and progress charts, under the guidance of the SLP.
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies developed by certified staff and report observations of student behavior to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with student management and appropriate behavior support during transitions and therapy sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Special Education Department and Speech-Language Pathology services.
Experience and Education Requirements:

Meets the requirements for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) under 201 KAR 17:034, including a bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology, Communication Disorders, or equivalent education, and holds a current Kentucky SLPA license.

Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Principles and techniques of speech-language pathology services.
  • Child development and disorders impacting speech, language, and communication.
  • Use and maintenance of augmentative and assistive communication devices.
  • Data collection and progress monitoring procedures.
Ability to:
  • Follow detailed instructions and treatment plans developed by a supervising SLP.
  • Effectively interact and communicate with students, staff, and families.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical standards in working with students.
  • Manage time, materials, and scheduling efficiently.
Working Conditions:
  • Environment: School settings including classrooms, therapy rooms, and other learning environments.
  • Physical Demands: Requires mobility to work in a school setting, including lifting and positioning students if necessary, and operating therapy equipment.
