Qualifications

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

  1. Plans and coordinates speech/language services and staff.
  2. Performs skilled technical work in the evaluation and treatment of persons with speech/language disorders.
  3. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS

Under the clinical supervision of the speech/language senior and the general supervision of the Relates Services Coordinator, an employee in this class is responsible for the comprehensive diagnostic and management services of persons with communication disorders, as well as supervising speech services and staff.

Work includes evaluation procedures necessary to determine speech/language disorders and functional levels regarding receptive/expressive language.

Therapy is prescribed through written reports, conferences, observation of techniques, and results obtained.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  1. Perform diagnostics, therapeutic services, and maintenance of comprehensive records.
  2. Assist in planning and coordinating in-service training for staff, parents, and others.
  3. Participate in staff conferences to evaluate and plan treatment methods.
  4. Oversee student records related to status and treatment procedures.
  5. Review and check all written work for accuracy and appropriateness.
  6. Position and transfer students as necessary.
  7. Responsible for prescriptions and maintenance of augmentative speech aids and peripheral equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan, assign, and assist in clinical supervision.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and aids used in speech/language therapy.
  • Knowledge of augmentative communication systems and aids.
  • Knowledge of current literature in the field.
  • Skilled in evaluating and demonstrating therapeutic exercises.
  • Ability to evaluate speech/language and communication disorders.
  • Skill in generating professional reports.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.

REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • N.Y State Certificate as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped.
  • Master's degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited university, including 375 hours of supervised clinical experience.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology (ASHA).
  • License in Speech Pathology issued by the State of New York.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid NYS Driver's License at the time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
  • Documentation of current Mantoux tuberculosis test.
  • Criminal background check required.
  • Minimum of 15 hours of staff development training annually.
