Job summary

Speech Language Pathologist

Primary Location: Mary Free Bed at Munson Grayling

Caseload: Primarily pediatric outpatient with some adult population.

Department: Grayling Community Health Outpatient (may support Grayling Inpatient Hospital and Skill Nursing).

Employment Type: Full-time, 32‑hour work week, Monday‑Friday (hours to be discussed in person).

Age‑Specific Responsibility

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development across the life span and must be able to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age‑specific needs and provide needed care as described in the department’s policies and procedures.

Summary

Assumes full responsibility for evaluating patient’s need for speech therapy. Plans and executes individual treatment programs in accordance with ASHA and SLP scope of practice. Keeps treatment skills upgraded through continuing education, evidence‑based research, and program development. Performs job responsibilities in accordance with the program’s strategic objectives and goals to carry out organizational strategic objectives.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Provides patient care (Quality).
  • Evaluates patient condition.
  • Establishes treatment goals in collaboration with patient and family and treatment team (Interdisciplinary, patient‑centered). (Quality).
  • Establishes written treatment plan and administers treatment for each patient according to the stated goals (Quality).
  • Delegates responsibilities to Speech Assistants as appropriate (Quality).
  • Re‑evaluates patient’s status and effects of treatment (Quality).
  • Revises treatment plan as necessary (Quality).
  • Reviews revised goals with patient and family as appropriate (Quality).
  • Evaluates patient’s need for medical equipment and orders appropriate equipment (Quality).
  • Evaluates equipment upon delivery and instructs patient, family, and health care workers (Quality).
  • Participates in planning for patient discharge, considering and communicating with patient, family, community support/services, and environmental limitations (Quality).
  • Demonstrates competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities (Quality).
  • Documents patient’s status and progress through initial evaluation, progress notes, and discharge summary in accordance with established time standards and reimbursement guidelines (Quality).
  • Communicates with others to integrate speech‑language pathology services with all aspects of patient care (Quality, Service).
  • Participates in conferences/discussions and exchanges of written records with interdisciplinary team members to integrate treatment plan (Quality, Service).
  • Instructs patient and family in speech‑language pathology procedures, including written instructions, as part of patient and family education (Quality, People).
  • Attends various meetings and in‑services as designated (Quality, People).
  • Follows all hospital policy and procedures including patient confidentiality and infection control (Quality).
  • Meets or exceeds program productivity expectations (Financial).
  • Provides discipline‑specific coverage within the Mary Free Bed system as requested (Financial, Service).
  • Adheres to Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior when working with patients, coworkers, and community members (Quality, Service, People).
  • Supports program operations as assigned (Quality, Service, People, Growth, Financial).
  • Participates in orientation and training of new staff (Quality, People).
  • Serves as clinical instructor for speech‑language pathology students and supervises CFY as needed. Supervises, teaches and evaluates skills of students. Communicates with participating universities regarding student skill level (Service).
  • Participates in program development and/or research activities (Service).
  • Meets or exceeds clinical outcome collection standards and performance/improvement goals established by department leadership (Service).

Essential Job Qualifications
  • M.S. or M.A. in Speech Pathology from an accredited university program.
  • Licensure required in every U.S. state and territory where the therapist is practicing or is in a clinical fellowship year. For Medicaid billing, SLP‑CCC is additionally required in the following states: DC, NC, WV, KY, MN, NE, KS, NM, NV, ID.
  • Mandatory BLS certification to meet department program protocol.
  • Physical requirements: none (No specific requirements).
