REPORTS TO: Building Principal, Supervisor of Special Education, and Director of Student Services

JOB GOAL: To provide remedial services to students with speech, language, voice, eating, swallowing, fluency, or hearing difficulties. Improve their methods of expressive/receptive communication and eventually attain appropriate speech or language skills. The speech and language therapist will also implement strategies and interventions to support students in improving their expressive/receptive communication.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide Level I, II, and III screening for students who may have speech/language difficulties.
• Level I: mass screening of an entire group of children
• Level II: screening due to a referral by a parent, teacher, or other professional
• Level III: direct interaction of the speech therapist with students as part of the response to intervention and instruction process or special education evaluation process.
• Participate in school-based screening process.
• Facilitate and participate in the evaluation report process for all students who receive speech and language as a related service.
• Assume role as chairperson of the evaluation/reevaluation process for students who have a speech and language disability as the sole reason for special education.
• Develop Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) for all students identified as having speech and language disabilities.
• Communicate with special education teachers regarding re‑evaluation and IEP needs for students with speech/language impairments.
• Provide a program of therapy in individual, small group, or classroom sessions.
• Communicate student progress to parents, teachers, and IEP team members.
• Cooperate with professional agencies.
• Prepare therapy materials, diagnostic reports, and therapy plans.
• Maintain comprehensive records and updated class lists.
• Inform the community of program availability and goals. Present information to parent groups, PTA, teacher groups/school administrators, and professional organizations.
• Perform classroom observations and visitations.
• Attend faculty and staff meetings.
• Refer, evaluate, and implement assistive technology goals when appropriate.
• Implement and support English as a Second Language program in cooperation with elementary and middle school ESL teachers.
• Any other duties assigned by the Superintendent or their designee.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
