Responsibilities

  • Assist the classroom teacher in delivering an effective instructional program.
  • Support students individually or in small groups to reinforce material.

  • Know basic education concepts, confidentiality, and due process.
  • Foster a positive attitude and respectful school environment.
  • Provide instructional activities using materials selected by the teacher.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clerical information for the program.
  • Maintain clean and orderly room and prepare instructional materials.
  • Communicate classroom rules and encourage positive behavior.
  • Supervise and manage student behavior in various settings.
  • Follow district policy and chain of command.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development.
  • Serve as substitute teacher when needed.
  • Work with students, parents, staff in a positive manner.

Job Summary

The paraprofessional will work under the direction of the classroom teacher, principal, or federal programs director in achieving the educational goals and objectives of all qualifying students through individual, small group, or whole group instruction.

Qualifications
  • Educational Requirements
    • High school diploma or GED or
    • Two years of college or 32 credits or
    • Associates degree or
    • Meet or exceed cut score on Praxis Exam for the Para Pro Assessment.
  • Past successful experience working with school age children.
  • May need to be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Positive public relations skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish the major duties listed below.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assist the assigned classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program.
  2. Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material and skills introduced by the teacher.
  3. Respond to students’ questions and requests for assistance.
  4. Become familiar with basic education knowledge with emphasis on due process procedures and confidentiality of information and records.
  5. Display a positive attitude toward school programs and show respect for leadership and programming decisions made by supervisors.
  6. Provide individualized instructional activities using materials and sequences selected/prescribed by the assigned teacher and other related personnel.
  7. Maintain all clerical information required of the program in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner.
  8. Help to maintain a positive classroom environment through performance of duties such as making attractive bulletin boards, developing interesting instructional materials, using equipment and materials appropriately, keeping the room and work areas clean and orderly, etc.
  9. Communicate classroom rules and encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  10. Supervise and manage student behavior in a variety of school settings.
  11. Discipline students in a manner consistent with school and teacher policies.
  12. Use appropriate reinforcement strategies in a manner indicating empathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities.
  13. Administer, score, and record such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.
  14. Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  15. Participate in staff meetings, appropriate in-service training, and other professional development activities as requested.
  16. Serve as the chief source of information and help for and substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the assigned teacher.
  17. Work with students, parents, staff, and others in a positive, encouraging manner.
  18. Know and follow district policy and chain of command.
  19. Act ethically and confidentially in all aspects of employment.
  20. Any other duties as assigned.
