The overall purpose of the Teacher - Special Education role is to support the instructional process by developing students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and daily activities; supervising students; developing lesson plans; delivering instruction; collaborating with staff and parents; and addressing student needs and inquiries.

Direct Supervisor: Building Principal

Essential Functions
  • Address individualized learning plans within lesson plans.
  • Administer assessments to evaluate student competency and develop learning plans.
  • Provide first aid and care for medically fragile children.
  • Communicate student progress to parents and guardians.
  • Assess student progress towards goals, especially IEP goals.
  • Collaborate with staff, parents, and community stakeholders to improve student outcomes.
  • Counsel students to improve performance and wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate teaching methods to meet IEP goals.
  • Guide instructional staff and volunteers.
  • Instruct students to improve academic and daily living skills.
  • Manage student behavior and monitor safety.
  • Participate in meetings and prepare documentation.
  • Report safety concerns and respond to emergencies.
  • Respond to inquiries and collaborate on instructional plans.
Competencies

Skills include assessment, operating office equipment, record-keeping, safety, first aid, data analysis, physical restraint, project management, and instructional techniques.

Knowledge includes child development, behavioral strategies, assessment tools, instructional media, cultural awareness, curricula, safety standards, and community resources.

Abilities include scheduling, data management, flexibility, relationship-building, confidentiality, communication, organization, teamwork, and working extended hours.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree

Physical Requirements

Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; fine motor skills; typical time split: 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing.
