  • Assist in adapting Academy policies for special education needs.
  • Supervise the effectiveness of the special education program regularly.
  • Order testing supplies and contribute to development of academy philosophy.

Job description

NATURE OF THE POSITION:

This position is responsible for managing, leading and monitoring all aspects of special education to ensure the department meets the necessary local, state, and federal requirements. Also, responsible for reviewing all referrals by Academy staff and establishing procedures for the appropriate personnel and other agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have a valid Michigan Administrator Certificate, AND
  • MDE approval for director or supervisor of Special Education through the Office of Special Education
  • Master's degree in special education or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4 years work experience in special education
  • Satisfactory criminal background check.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure compliance under all state and federal mandates including, but not limited to: IDEIA and ESSA. Develop administrative procedures and prepare state and federal reports per compliance mandates.
  • Examine confidential student files to monitor for compliance with state and federal compliance.
  • Serve as a contact person for parents, teachers, principals, and others from outside agencies.
  • Conduct In-service training for special education teachers and other staff members.
  • Assist the principal(s) with special education staff evaluations.
  • Provide and maintain child count information as required by state and federal regulations.
  • Provide information for maintenance of proper class size and utilization of staff to improve special educational programs.
  • Assist in the adaptation of Academy policies to include special education needs.
  • Supervise the special education program's effectiveness on a regular basis.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Order testing supplies as needed by special education teachers.
  • Contribute to the development of the Academy philosophy of special education.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of any special education personnel.
  • Secure consultants as needed to work with students with special needs.
  • Collaboration and coordination with system-wide administrators and specialists in the implementation of quality instructional programming.
  • Travel if required or necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
