Job description

Position Start Date: 2026-2027 school year

Closing Date: 06/19/2026

Hours: 6.75 hours per day, while school is in session.

Salary Range: $14.75 per hour, subject to increase based on experience. This position includes benefits.

Experience: Job related experience is desired.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent.

Certificates: 48 college units, AA degree, or demonstrate college level skills by passing the Para proficiency test within 60 days of hire, https://www.ets.org/parapro/register/at_home_testing.

Clearances: Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.

The job of Special Education Assistant - CARE is done under the direction of assigned personnel, assists, tutors, and trains special education and other students identified with behavioral issues in a classroom or similar learning situation, and performs classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process. This position reports to the Building Principal/Director of Special Education Services.

Essential Functions
  • Assists special education students and other identified students with behavior and/or academic, under the general direction of the teacher (e.g. reading, explaining words, reading to students, arts and crafts, classroom activities, individual assignments, etc.) to enable participation in classroom activities.
  • Confers with teachers (special education and/or mainstream) to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Instructs special education students and other identified students as directed by the teacher, one on one or in small groups (e.g. math groups, providing examples, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) to help students progress on IEP goals.
  • Maintains instructional materials and student files/records to ensure availability and reliable information.
  • Monitors individual students during activities and transfers to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. correcting papers, recording grades, copying, displaying materials, collecting papers, distributing supplies) to support the teacher in preparing records and materials.
  • Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for documentation and communication.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff (e.g. administrators, psychologists, teachers) to provide information.
  • Attends meetings as requested (e.g. inservice training, workshops, IEPs) to receive and convey information.
  • Assists other personnel as needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills: Perform multiple tasks, operate standard office equipment, prepare and maintain accurate records.

Knowledge: Basic math, reading manuals, writing documents, presenting information, and understanding complex multi‑step instructions. Knowledge of age‑appropriate activities, subject matter taught, and stages of child development.

Ability: Schedule activities, gather and collate data, use job‑related equipment, work with diverse individuals, problem solve, maintain confidentiality, exhibit patience and compassion, and handle frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities

Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; provide information and/or advise others; and continually have the opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The position requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. The job involves approximately 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. It is performed in a generally hazard‑free environment.
