Title: Specimen Technician

Shift: M-F: 11pm-7:30am CST

- The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department.
- This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include, but are not limited to, A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner.
- The role is complex and requires good organizational skills, with the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients.
- The SPT I must understand compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily. This position is critical to maintaining quality and customer satisfaction.
- Flexibility is essential due to frequent changes and demands from customers.
- The majority of work is on the night shift; however, weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime may be required based on staffing needs.
- The department emphasizes productivity and quality standards, with a focus on departmental completion times.
- This position requires a data background with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Work is performed in a biohazard environment, adhering to safety protocols.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and communicate effectively with all staff levels.

Education:
HS diploma or equivalent.
Required Knowledge:
Basic understanding of computers; preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or specimen processing.
Work Experience:
No experience required; prior laboratory experience is preferred. Medical background, including medical terminology relevant to a clinical laboratory, is advantageous. Previous hospital laboratory experience and experience in a production environment are also preferred but not mandatory.
