Job summary

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories in Milwaukee, WI is seeking a Specimen Processor I for the 2nd shift (12:00 pm - 8:30 pm) to support ambulatory and hospital workflows. You will perform pre-analytical log-in, specimen labeling, processing, and LIS-related duties under supervision, ensuring accurate sample handling and timely delivery.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma and basic computer skills; phlebotomy training is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 Some Clinical Healthcare Experience Or Related Education Preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic Windows-based computer knowledge including keyboarding, data entry and use of email; Epic experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy training/diploma preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs pre-analytical log-in and processing for patients served by outreach clinics.
  • Labels specimens accurately and verifies identity before processing.
  • Operates centrifuges, pipettes, and other prep equipment per procedures.
  • Triages and handles time-sensitive specimens and communicates with Client Services.
  • Performs phlebotomy for walk-in clients using AIDET standards.
  • Supports shift leadership and assists other departments as needed.

Standard Hours: 40.00

  • Positions with an "FTE" (full time equivalency) of .8 - 1.0 are eligible for full-time medical, dental and vision benefits. Positions with an "FTE" of .5 - .799 are eligible for part-time pro-rated medical, dental and vision benefits*

Shift: 2nd shift (12:00 pm - 8:30 pm; weekend & holiday rotations required) Ambulatory

Summary

Performs pre-analytical log-in and processing functions of the department on a daily basis for patients serviced by the outreach clinics.

Responsibilities
  • Performs specimen interface log in for inpatient units and clinics (Hospital) or for outreach clinics (Ambulatory). Accurately labels specimens according to policy and procedure with no documented mislabels. Includes initials on all specimens labeled by processor. Consistently meets the productivity defined and set forth by the department leader.
  • Identifies samples with incomplete, inaccurate or ambiguous information and follows up with client services or by creating a clear and concise CSHOLD.
  • Uses resources available to define test mnemonics, sample stability and processing requirements.
  • Interprets the Client Database, understanding when to use and where to find pertinent information.
  • Performs specimen processing according to policy and procedure. Verifies identity of mother tube and aliquot tube before performing manual aliquoting of patient samples using lab labels and test directory. Including operating the centrifuges, pipetting samples, accurately labeling samples including initials on all processed samples, and follows processing guidelines to ensure specimen stability. * Schedules appointments and releases pending orders in Laboratory Information System (LIS) according to policy and procedure.
  • Follows policy and procedure for cart runner, specimen delivery and/or transporter assignments, accurately picking up and/or delivering samples or blood products to the correct testing department or hospital area in a timely manner.
  • Triages and adheres to special handling and time sensitive specimens.
  • Participates in and successfully completes all competency assessments/challenges specific to this position. The specific departments maintains records documenting and substantiating competency and/or improvement plans.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, including but not limited to: Allomap/Study processing, Transport, In Sort Triage, Pneumatic Tube System usage, specimen disposal, packaging and assembly of biohazard boxes, scanning racks into storage tracking system, emptying recycling, stocking labels, disinfecting work stations, assisting other departments with Pre-Analytical tasks , when needed, etc. * Performs in charge duties for the shift (after discussing this with the staff member), adjusting assignments as needed. Escalates any patient concerns to Client Services and leaders as appropriate. Completes and emails shift Ops-report to leaders.
  • Effectively communicates both verbally and in writing, addresses all inquiries, requests, and concerns thoroughly, following through positively and appropriately. Timely informs leadership of issues or concerns .
  • Performs phlebotomy (as applicable) with walk in clients using customer service standards including AIDET. Collects appropriate number and types of tubes, includes initials and collection information on all specimens collected by the phlebotomist. Accurately completes requisitions and obtains insurance information.
  • Provides instructions to patients regarding non-blood sample collection and follows the Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories Performance Excellence Customer Service Standards using customer service standards including AIDET during their interactions. Greets and schedules patients when they present for services. Verifies and updates demographic information.
Ambulatory
  • Follows policy and procedure for manual entry of client requisitions and QA. Recognizes and documents problems. Includes initials on all specimens labeled by processor. Consistently meets the productivity defined and set forth by the department leader.
  • When performing manual order entry or specimen interface log in, correctly documents samples received on paperwork and places tagalongs on all applicable paperwork.
  • Follows policy and procedure for handling outreach stats. Expedites delivery to testing departments.
  • Follows policy and procedure for handling client frozen specimens. Distributes frozen samples to testing locations ensuring appropriate temperature for next process. Hospital:
  • Efficiently performs specimen log-in and processing in Cancer Center lab (as applicable after discussing this with the staff member ) according to process and procedures.
  • Handles ED or other time-sensitive samples according to policy. Expedites delivery to the testing departments.
  • Operates and performs daily maintenance (as applicable) on the automation line, including masking analyzers as needed, stocking supplies, loading/unloading specimens and distributing them to testing areas, handling problem specimens, troubleshooting hardware issues, navigating Infinity, communicating with the technologists involving issues with the automation line and sending out communication to automation line email group.
  • Performs urine bench and 24 hour urine operations according to policy and procedures with no documented mislabels. Includes initials on all specimens labeled by processor.
  • May assist in providing training as needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
2 Some Clinical Healthcare Experience Or Related Education Preferred.
