Job summary

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories is seeking a Grossing Technician for the 1st shift at our Milwaukee facility. This full-time position involves processing gross specimens, assisting pathology staff, and ensuring accurate accessioning and LIS entry within a busy Anatomic Pathology lab.

Responsibilities include operating tissue processors and cryostat, preparing slides, managing specimens, and maintaining a safe, organized work environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in science or medical field with at least 1 year Grossing Technician experience
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
• Basic computer knowledge and clerical skills; ability to multi-task and maintain accuracy

Standard Hours: 40.00

Shift: 1st shift (6:00 am - 2:30 pm; Monday - Friday)

Summary

Gross specimens limited to small biopsies, bone marrows, small dermatopathology specimens, and other specimens which would be submitted in total. Additional specimens may be assigned at the discretion of the PA or AP Manager. Duties also include frozen sections, accessioning, processor maintenance, and setting up of tissues.

Responsibilities

• Communication/Customer Service: Communicates well both verbally and in writing. Shares information and ideas with others and utilizes good listening skills. Handles customer and co-worker inquiries and follows through positively and appropriately on inquiries, requests and complaints. Informs supervisor of problems or concerns as they occur.
• Maintains/services instruments and equipment according to established protocols. Demonstrates the ability to operate or use instruments for intended purpose. Monitors and documents instrument performance and checks/recognizes malfunctions and identifies the need for repair. (Processors, dictating system, cassette labeler, and printers.) Able to revalidate equipment after repair.
• Unpacks supplies and stocks shelves as needed. Inventories department stock and informs manager of supply shortages.
• Consistently receives, accepts and recognizes specimens that arrive in the lab, checking for proper identification and specimen transport condition. Accurately accessions specimens and selects paper work necessary to maintain identification, creates worksheets, recognizes STAT specimens and handles them according to protocol.
• Utilizes appropriate procedures for tissue processing. Programs, operates, and maintains tissue processors, including rotating or changing solutions and paraffin in a timely manner. Monitors and documents instrument performance, checks and recognizes malfunctions and identifies the need for service.
• Properly disposes of signed out specimens and placentas. Uses Laboratory Information System (LIS) to pull an accurate list with the appropriate dates of specimens to dump. Follows laboratory procedure for the disposal of biohazard specimens including proper labeling of boxes and adherence to weight limits.
• Assists the supervisor and/or manager with writing and editing policies in policy management system. Prepares for CAP inspections.
• Uses LIS to label specimens and print cassettes. In conjunction with LIS (processing task order entry), makes changes to cases. Troubleshoots and performs routine maintenance on the cassette labeler. Scans all specimens and makes comments in LIS for difficult cases.
• Operates a cryostat with correct settings, temperatures, alignments and knife angles to insure optimum sectioning. Replaces blades as necessary. Determines block orientation and facing in order to obtain a representative section. Correctly labels slides with appropriate information. Freezes and cuts tissue and produces acceptable slides in the allotted time frame. Recognizes and evaluates instances in which a specific tissue requires deviation from standard procedures in order to insure that a diagnostic section is produced. Cleans and disinfects cryostat and rotates or changes stains as needed.
• Transfers small biopsies or other small specimens from containers to cassettes. Inks and sections small dermatopathology specimens per procedure. Properly inks and sections specimen to provide proper orientation. Dictates or types the gross description and cassette designation.
• Completes the entire process for bone marrows. Enters any data into LIS that is necessary. Grosses bone marrows that are submitted in total. Performs the decal process and processes the tissue according to procedure.
• Properly embeds surgical specimens, medical examiner, and autopsy cases in preparation for microtomy. Matches up appropriate paperwork. Chooses correct molds and orients tissue correctly. Understands embedding priorities. Uses the appropriate forms for documenting issues. Maintains and cleans the embedding area and stations.
• Regularly maintains a clean and safe work environment including disinfecting instruments, counters, work surfaces, refrigerators, and equipment. Stores and discards tissue following proper protocols. Safely handles sharps and other dissection instruments. Uses safe handling practices when working with chemicals/solvents.
• May assist in providing training as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college with a science or medical field major and a minimum of one year Grossing Technician experience (Internal candidates will require a minimum of one year experience in WDL’s Anatomic Pathology lab).
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Basic computer knowledge and clerical skills including telephones, email, pagers, copy and fax machines.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, in both team settings and independently.
• High level of accuracy in reading, writing, proofreading, editing, spelling, and punctuation.
• Ability to use good judgement, take initiative, and adapt to changes in work assignments.
