Job summary

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with at least 6 months of experience in a clinical laboratory, working with biological specimens.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy program or equivalent phlebotomy training is preferred.
  • Must obtain Department of Transportation and International Air Transportation Association certification within 180 days if required by position.
  • Employment with the health system is contingent upon signing the DRP and related terms.

Responsibilities

  • Creates Registration encounters and releases orders from HIS; receives samples in LIS; prints and affixes labels to specimens.
  • Performs order entry and paperwork as required.
  • Ensures proper container type, centrifugation, specimen sterility, and transport conditions.
  • Ensures positive patient identification and correct specimen collection and handling/transport; prioritizes based on urgency.
  • Performs specimen processing tasks including aliquoting urine and body fluids; manages inventory and storage.
  • In Microbiology, handles specimens with sterile techniques and prepares culture media as appropriate.
  • Assists with specimen preservation and communicates with residents or providers as needed.
  • Answers inquiries and provides customer service to internal/external customers following standards.
