Job summary

ChristianaCare is recruiting for a Full-time Specimen Processing Technician in the General Laboratory. Midnight shift with every other weekend and 2-3 holidays per year. Performs specimen processing, LIS data entry, labeling, and QA tasks to ensure accurate test orders.

Ideal candidates have a High School diploma and knowledge of LIS and specimen processing; benefits include medical/dental/vision, tuition reimbursement, 403(b) match, and generous PTO including 12 weeks parental leave.

Responsibilities

• Sorts laboratory specimens and request slips for accuracy of test orders and correct specimen types.
• Inputs test orders in LIS and prints/affixes labels to specimens; prioritizes stat work to meet turnaround times.
• Processes multiple specimens from invasive procedures with drug administration on time intervals.
• Prepares and sends out specimens to national reference labs per guidelines.
• Follows protocol for receiving ChristianaCare phlebotomy specimens and reconciles tracking slips.
• Verifies PowerChart requisition/specimen match for ED and in-house samples; uses patient data to ensure correct ID.
• Registers outpatient drop-off samples in Soarian; selects encounter and orders tests; completes agency registrations.
• Performs daily audits to ensure accuracy of test orders.
• Handles all telephone requests courteously; seeks guidance from supervisor/MLS when needed.
• Follows LIS downtime procedures and maintains equipment and supplies.
• Performs duties safely and reports unsafe conditions.

ChristianaCare is currently recruiting for a Full-time Specimen Processing Technician to work in the General Laboratory. Midnight Shift. This position requires every other weekend and 2-3 holidays per year.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sorts laboratory specimens and request slips for the accuracy of test orders and correct specimen types.

Input test orders in Lab Information System (LIS). Prints and properly affixes identification labels to all incoming patient specimens. Prioritizes incoming work, ensuring samples for stat testing are delivered to the appropriate laboratory section to maintain stated turnaround times.

Process multiple specimens from invasive procedures with drug administering on a series of time intervals.

Prepares and send out specimens to national reference labs and charge them according to the established guidelines.

Follows established protocols for receiving Christiana Care phlebotomy collected specimens, including reconciliation of tracking slips from other Christiana Care laboratories and outreach sites.

Follows established protocol for verification of PowerChart requisition/specimen match for Emergency Department and in-house nurse collected samples. Utilizes patient demographic information such as name, date of birth, medical record number, financial number, physician, and encounter to ensure accurate identification.

Registers outpatient drop-off samples accurately in Soarian. Selects the correct encounter and orders laboratory tests accurately in the LIS. Accurately completes agency registrations for drop-off samples.
Performs audit daily to ensure the accuracy of test orders.

Handles all telephone requests in a courteous manner. When appropriate, calls provider/nursing unit to clarify any confusion or question regarding requisitions or samples received. Seeks technical guidance from supervisor or laboratory Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) when needed.

Follows all established LIS downtime procedures.

Maintains equipment and supplies.

Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma required.

Previous specimen processing experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Hourly Pay Range: $19.48 - $28.24This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare's good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
