Job: Specimen Technician
Location: Gaithersburg, MD
Duration: 6+ Months
Shift/Time Zone: 3rd shift Monday-Friday 11pm-7:30am with Saturday rotation.
Job Description:
- The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner. The job is complex and requires good organizational skills and the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to the tests ordered by clients. The SPT I must also understand compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily.
- This position is critical to quality and customer satisfaction. Due to frequent changes, flexibility is essential. The SPT I will be exposed to various demands from customers. The majority of work is on the night shift, but weekends, holidays, on-call duties, and overtime may be required based on staffing needs.
- The department is a production environment emphasizing productivity, quality standards, and timely completion of tasks.
- The position requires a data background with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour. Work is performed in a biohazard environment, practicing good safety habits. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods, communicate effectively with all staff levels, adhere to safety and compliance policies, keep the work area clean, and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability to change are important qualities for this role.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Required Knowledge: Basic computer skills; preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and specimen processing.
Work Experience:
- No experience required; previous laboratory experience is preferred.
- Medical background, including medical terminology relevant to clinical laboratories, is a plus.
- Experience in hospital laboratories and production environments is advantageous but not mandatory.
