Job Summary:

As the leader of the health care team, provides professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of care, policies, and procedures. Demonstrates performance consistent with the Medical Center Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan of the organization. Remains flexible to changing systems; is expected to demonstrate quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice; and treats co-workers, patients, families, and all members of the health care team with dignity and respect.
Essential Responsibilities:

The Registered Nurse demonstrates proficiency by exhibiting the following skills, competencies, and behaviors:

Nursing Process:



  • Develops and contributes to individualized care plans reflecting assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Ensures plans include multidisciplinary planning, consultation, and education.

  • Ensures plans are based on admission or outpatient data, ongoing findings, age-appropriate care, cultural needs, and acuity.

  • Discusses and completes plans with patients and families in a timely manner.

  • Monitors patient progress and revises plans based on condition and evaluation.

  • Ensures care meets standards of practice.

  • Develops and completes discharge plans, addressing barriers and providing patient/family education. Ensures understanding of discharge instructions.

  • Ensures patient safety related to medications and procedures, including the five rights, fall prevention, decubitus prevention, and infection control.

  • Optimizes pain control and patient comfort; addresses patient anxieties, fears, and concerns.

  • Ensures patient understanding of medication purposes, side effects, and administration instructions both in-hospital and at discharge.

Documentation:



  • Charting is accurate, legible, dated, and timed.

  • Documentation reflects nursing interventions and evaluations.

  • Uses computer systems effectively for optimal patient care.

Clinical Outcomes:



  • Discusses patient findings and progress with the healthcare team.

  • Demonstrates competencies during probation and ongoing validation.

  • Makes comprehensive nursing decisions based on data interpretation and patient outcomes.

  • Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.

Workplace Safety:



  • Adheres to workplace safety principles.

  • Maintains a safe environment using standard precautions.

Patient Care Experience:



  • Practices customer service standards.

  • Responds promptly to call lights, alarms, and requests.
