The Specialty Medical Director (SMD) is responsible for recruiting, retaining, and supporting veterinary specialists across the organization. This key role involves shaping and maintaining specialty services, developing recruitment pipelines, supporting operational excellence, and fostering industry connections for clinical research initiatives. The SMD acts as a trusted medical partner to specialists and hospital teams, working collaboratively to drive quality care, innovation, and organizational growth.
This position is remote and requires nationwide travel.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not all-inclusive:
Recruitment (30%)
- Build and maintain a network to create a continuous pipeline of specialty talent.
- Represent the organization at veterinary specialty conferences and recruitment events.
- Identify and engage ideal candidates to launch new specialty services and practices.
- Collaborate with the University Liaison team to develop residency sponsorship pipelines.
- Work with the specialty recruiter to identify strategies for recruitment and onboarding of new veterinarians into specialty practices.
Retention and Relationship Building (25%)
- Foster meaningful relationships with specialists to enhance engagement, job satisfaction, and retention.
- Act as a mentor and advocate, supporting career development and collaboration across teams.
Medical and Operational Support (20%)
- Collaborate with the Specialty Operations Director (SOD) team to provide operational and clinical guidance.
- Support hospital teams in improving workflow, operational processes, and financial performance.
- Coordinate with general practice hospital RMDs to ensure seamless referral relationships.
Residency Program Development (15%)
- Partner with veterinary specialists to establish scalable and sustainable residency programs.
- Collaborate with the Director of Academic Partnerships to implement the SVP + MVP residency program.
- Streamline shared resources to enhance residency training experiences across the network.
Clinical Trial Coordination (10%)
- Coordinate with clinicians and the Director of Clinical Trials to implement and manage veterinary clinical trials.
Minimum Qualifications
Required education, licenses, certifications, and experience include:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with at least 5 years of small animal clinical experience.
- Minimum of 5 years' progressive management experience.
- Proven success in fiscal and operational management, with financial expertise.
- Experience in strategic and operational planning and management.
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Fluent in written and verbal English skills.
- Adequate vision to perform essential duties.
- Physical ability to lift 2-20 pounds, sit, stand, walk, and perform related activities; good hearing and communication skills; proficiency with computers and peripherals.
