Job Summary

A Specialty Interpreter facilitates communication for LEP patients and visitors, translating spoken or signed messages between them and LMC staff. The role requires cultural and linguistic competence, adherence to professional standards, and the ability to provide sight-translation of medical materials to improve patient understanding.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience as a medical interpreter
  • Certification through CCHI (Languages of Limited Diffusion) or RID (ASL interpreters) within the first year of employment
  • Proficiency in at least two languages, including English and ASL or another foreign language of limited diffusion
Essential Functions
  • Provide accurate interpretation using medical, business, and general terminology
  • Follow ethical guidelines from NCIHC and RID
  • Translate relevant materials as needed
  • Serve as cultural mediator to enhance communication
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain and improve interpreting skills, stay updated on linguistic variances
  • Participate in Continuing Education to maintain certification
  • Respond to service requests promptly
  • Handle high-pressure or emotionally intense situations sensitively
  • Travel to other LMC facilities as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
