Specialty Assistant Store Manager in Training

Position Purpose

Specialty Assistant Store Manager in Training (SASM-IT) will gain hands-on experience in the key responsibilities and functions of a Specialty Assistant Store Manager at The Home Depot. The SASM-IT will undergo a comprehensive training program that includes hands-on experience, mentorship, and leadership development. During their training, they will become familiar with Manager on Duty responsibilities and gain insight into overseeing the Specialty and Pro Departments. In collaboration with the Store Manager, Assistant Store Managers (ASMs), Home Services, and Pro business partners, they will learn to develop and implement strategies that boost sales, enhance customer service, and drive profitability across Specialty, Pro, and Services businesses. SASM-ITs are expected to lead by example and uphold all lawful company policies and positions. The training period will last up to 6 weeks, during which they will learn to execute key responsibilities of a SASM.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Training and Preparation (50%): Participate in structured training covering retail management, including operations, customer service, sales, profitability, and company policies. Support staffing, stock management, associate supervision, customer issue resolution, and support service needs. Demonstrate performance management skills and complete training modules.
  2. Customer Experience (15%): Supervise associates in selling efforts, promote GET culture, and lead by example. Drive customer service and engagement, resolving customer concerns promptly.
  3. Sales and Productivity (15%): Collaborate on merchandise placement, signage, and inventory management. Learn store equipment operation and daily financial management.
  4. Operations Management (10%): Perform opening and closing duties, adhere to policies, and maintain SOPs, especially safety compliance. Work to reduce shrink and ensure process accuracy.
  5. Safety (10%): Follow all safety and hazmat procedures consistently.
Reporting and Travel
  • Typically reports to Store Manager.
  • No direct reports during training.

Overnight travel requirement is less than 5%.

Physical and Working Conditions
  • Stand, walk, and lift moderate weight (8-20 pounds) regularly.
  • Work in a comfortable indoor environment with infrequent unpleasant conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Legally permitted to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience; leadership experience of 1+ year required, 2+ years preferred.
Certifications and Competencies
  • No certifications required.
  • Key competencies include Action Oriented, Collaborates, Customer Focus, Drives Results, Resourcefulness.
