Job description

Under general supervision, this position leads patrons in group fitness classes, events, activities, and/or private/semi-private fitness programs within specific niche populations (e.g., Pilates Reformer, chronic conditions, pre/post-natal, sports performance, arthritis patients, etc.). This role may assist with recruitment and mentoring of new staff, provide feedback and evaluation on program and fitness training protocols, and demonstrate experienced coaching perspectives through shadow shifts.

  1. Work with niche populations within fitness curriculum and programs identified by the Fitness and Wellness Division leadership as "specialty".
  2. Teach a minimum of two (2) classes weekly for specialized demographics or train clients during private/semi-private sessions for a minimum of 8 to 11 hours weekly.
  3. Stay current and demonstrate ongoing competence in training protocols for specified formats and niche populations (e.g., prehab/rehab, chronic conditions, sports performance, Pilates Reformer, etc.).
  4. Oversee and manage a safe environment for group fitness and private coaching participants; execute proper techniques for various fitness skills.
  5. Create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere; conduct yourself professionally.
  6. Support and ensure adherence to departmental philosophies, policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  7. Educate and monitor Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) of class participants throughout sessions.
  8. Schedule client training sessions and communicate with clients regarding cancellations or rescheduling.
  9. Maintain accurate training records and reports, including activity logs and attendance.
  10. Attend trainings and meetings as established by the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator; seek additional educational opportunities and maintain required certifications and credits.
  11. Answer questions and make referrals to class participants regarding personal training, specialty classes, injuries, or further education.
  12. Assist with special events and participate in annual maintenance activities at the Recreation Center and/or Fieldhouse.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements include a nationally accredited certification specialized in niche coaching formats (general fitness certifications like Les Mills or UpBeat Barre do not qualify) or one specialized training certification in fitness/health programming for niche populations (e.g., Chronic Conditions/Cancer Exercise Specialist, Certified Special Populations Trainer). Two (2) years of experience coaching specified programs or working with niche populations (e.g., Aqua Arthritis, Pilates Reformer, Pre/Post-Natal, Chronic Conditions, Sport Performance) is preferred.

  • Skill in providing adaptations for clients participating in niche programs or training requiring alternative coaching methods.
  • Skill in training and supervising patrons in private or group settings.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer use and various software programs.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with the public, handle difficult situations, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to operate and repair small/lights equipment, such as studio microphones or fitness equipment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Working Conditions

The work environment is typically climate-controlled but may expose employees to extreme temperatures, humidity, and high noise levels. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Tools & Equipment

Frequent use of fitness equipment, including strength, conditioning, weight, toning, and cardiovascular machines. Occasional use of fitness devices like body composition scanners, metabolic rate machines, and software.

Physical Demands

Frequent standing, walking, sitting, talking, handling objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, and balancing. Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds with assistance. Visual acuity required for close and distant vision.

Environment

Primarily in a climate-controlled environment, with exposure to extreme conditions and noise levels ranging from moderate to high.
