Job summary

Versiti in Indianapolis is seeking a detail-oriented laboratory support specialist to perform clerical and technical lab tasks, ensuring sample integrity and accurate data entry. You will support regulatory compliance, assist with shipping and receiving, and service internal and external customers professionally.

This role emphasizes teamwork, initiative, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, contributing to lifesaving diagnostic services and testing operations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Two years attendance at an accredited college, university or technical college with emphasis in a science/medical related field preferred
  • 1-3 years customer service experience required
  • 1-3 years medical related experience or training preferred
  • Data entry or LIS experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Understand and perform to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements
  • May support leadership during audits
  • Ship, receive, and track packages and specimens while maintaining the integrity of samples
  • Receive, classify, and process specimens in an accurate and expedient manner
  • Inspect specimens and paperwork for accuracy and acceptability
  • Maintain sample identity and ensure samples are handled and stored at appropriate temperatures
  • Use appropriate systems to accurately perform data entry functions
  • Proofread own work for content, spelling accuracy, and document format
  • Maintain sample integrity and ensure proper identification of all specimens
  • Prepare samples for laboratory testing, as needed
  • May perform reagent preparation
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance and calibration on equipment
  • Document sample issues or discrepancies and coordinate with client
  • Respond to inquiries with professionalism and courtesy
  • Provide exemplary customer service to internal and external customers
  • Maintain departmental records and inventory
  • Work weekend and holiday rotations as scheduled

Position Summary

Under the direction of department leadership, performs clerical and other technical lab duties in a timely and accurate manner, with quality that exceeds customer expectations. Takes pride in performing customer service tasks, executed at a high level. Executes to daily scheduled tasks, takes initiative within the scope of the role, and strives to improve work processes based on laboratory and client needs. Aligns to and supports Versiti's mission, vision, and values as well as department goals and objectives. Understands to a high degree the importance of daily tasks performed and the impact they have on the patients and providers we work with to provide lifesaving diagnostic services.

Responsibilities

  • May support leadership during audits.

  • Receive, classify, and process specimens in an accurate and expedient manner.

  • Use appropriate systems to accurately perform data entry functions.

  • Maintain sample integrity and ensure proper identification of all specimens.
  • Prepare samples for laboratory testing, as needed.
  • May perform reagent preparation.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance and calibration on equipment, as needed.
  • Properly identify and clearly document sample issues or discrepancies and work with client to resolve, as appropriate.
  • Answer telephone calls and respond to email requests with professionalism and a high degree of courtesy and responsiveness. Research and resolve issues with follow up to customers in a prompt manner.
  • Use written and verbal communication skills to provide exemplary customer service to internal and external customers, and appropriately document interactions.
  • Maintain organization of departmental records, as needed.
  • Support the maintenance of reagent and supply inventory, as needed.
  • Work weekend and holiday rotations, as scheduled.
  • May train others on job tasks, as assigned.
  • Maintain all applicable competencies, sufficient continuing education credits, and perform duties in accordance with laboratory policy
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
  • Understands and performs in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Data entry or LIS (Laboratory Information System) experience preferred

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as Standard Operating Procedures, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and other department manuals.
