Job summary

District Nursing Services

SPECIALIST, SCHOOL NURSING

61G (School Support Administrator, Nurse Administrator; 0516)

(Six Positions)

Serves in an administrative region or in the central office of District Nursing Services; when assigned to a region, supervises the activities of school nurses assigned to schools and early education centers within its boundaries; when assigned to the central office, facilitates the work of school nurses who provide District-wide nursing services for specially-funded programs or special nursing services; serves as a resource person in matters affecting school nursing services.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Schedules, assigns, provides orientations for, and provides supervision to school nurses, substitute school nurses, and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) at the elementary and secondary levels within an assigned region or in positions providing District-wide services to ensure access and continuity of nursing services and student wellness
• Serves as a resource for school nurses, LVNs, school administrators, and the school community; promotes district nursing services
• Visits development centers for handicapped and other special education schools, early education centers, alternative and continuation schools, and other special programs within a region to observe the practice of the school nurses and LVNs to ensure appropriate patient care and efficiency of services; collects information relating to pertinent problems; and makes improvement recommendations
• Works collaboratively to communicate expectations, evaluate, document performance, and provide assistance and guidance to school nurses and LVNs
• Reviews nursing records to ensure proper clinical and billing documentation of administered nursing services
• Serves as a technical resource person in the development of curriculum materials related to the field of health education
• Promotes and implements the supplemental school nurse services, which are a part of specially funded programs, in support of administrators, schools, and community initiatives
• Supports the professional growth of school nurses and LVNs through cooperative planning of in-service education programs with the District Nursing Services office

CONTINUED - PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Participates, when necessary, as a member of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) committee
• When assigned to a region, provides guidance to school nurses in the preparation of classroom presentations of health education materials to supplement the on-going health education program
• When assigned to the central office, provides technical support and supervision to assist nursing services in the following programs: special education and specially funded programs, and other supplemental nursing services
• Provides school nurse representation to school advisory councils
• Assists in the implementation and monitoring of school nursing programs
• Assists, as required, in program planning for summer school nursing services for an assigned region
• Evaluates the performance of subordinate personnel
• During periods of critical personnel shortage or other emergency situation, shall temporarily perform any duties, as directed, within the authorization of any credentials held by the incumbent that are registered with the Office of the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools that are part of the class description requirements in effect at the time such duties are performed
• Performs other duties as assigned

SALARY:

61G, (School Support Administrator, Nurse Administrator; 0516) – E Basis ($149,544 – $179,920) – 234 paid days

• In the case of an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized "settlement" (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
• For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
• Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority-based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public-school service as a school nurse
• A valid California Administrative Services Credential (Candidates who do not currently possess a valid California Administrative Services Credential may be considered for appointment provided they are eligible to enroll in, and successfully complete, the District-sponsored Preliminary Administrative Credential Program within the required timeframe. Candidates must meet all applicable California credentialing requirements and maintain satisfactory progress toward obtaining the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential.)
• A valid California Health and Development Credential authorizing service as a supervisor of health in the capacity of a school nurse OR a valid California School Nurse Services Credential
• An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
• Possession of a valid active California Registered Nurse License issued by the California Board of Registered Nurses
• Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework*
• A valid California driver license and the use of an insured automobile
• A valid active Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS/CPR/AED) issued by an approved program
• A valid active First Aid card issued by an approved program

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of college or university-level course work in fields related to nursing or health
• Demonstrated experience in effective communication with students, parents, other District personnel, and community representatives, both individually and as a group
• Experience in application of accepted trends, literature, and research in the field of school nursing
• Demonstrated experience composing and comprehending written communication
• Demonstrated experience working effectively with all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, linguistic, and disability groups
