Job summary

OceanaGold is seeking an experienced Equipment Trainer to lead onboarding and ongoing training for our process plant personnel. You will train operators on equipment operation, plant processes, and safety procedures, develop curricula, and create documentation to ensure competency and safe performance across the site near Charlotte, SC.

The role emphasizes hands-on and classroom training, working with engineers and safety teams, and maintaining training records in INX.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience and skills related to plant operations.
  • Minimum of 1 year’s experience in LOTOTO and Permit to Work systems in mining or heavy industrial environments.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an equipment trainer or instructional role.
  • Proven ability to develop training curricula, presentations and instructional materials.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to simplify complex concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead onboarding trainings for new employees focusing on plant layout, circuits, P&ID references and housekeeping.
  • Deliver hands-on and classroom training on equipment operation, processes and systems.
  • Develop, update and deliver training curriculum, lesson plans and assessments.
  • Create SOPs, work instructions, checklists and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with engineers and safety teams to keep materials accurate and current.
  • Support Permit to Work system development and maintenance to minimize production impact.

Job Description

The following are department objectives that all Process personnel work to achieve:

  • No Lost Time Injuries.
  • Development of team members to add value to Oceana Gold group and individuals within the team.
  • Achieve or better production number for gold production.
  • Achieve targets at or less than budget for costs.
  • Strive to improve areas of safety and environmental protection.
  • Increase production while reducing cost per tonne or ore through the mill.
  • Increase mill throughput and utilization of the plant.
  • Demonstrate and promote OGC values at all times.

To meet these objectives, the plant specialist will perform several duties. The primary role is to ensure plant personnel are trained and able to carry out duties and responsibilities while working in the process plant. Thes responsibilities include:

  • Help develop and lead the two-week onboarding process for new employees. The training will focus on the overall plant layout, including circuit overviews and general processes, equipment location and P&ID references, and general operator responsibilities, with an emphasis on housekeeping. The target objectives from this training include, but are not limited to, an operator being able to:
  • Perform work safely and immediately report unsafe conditions/situations to supervisors.
  • Use and follow all approved plant and department safety. Health and environmental rules, procedures, and directions.
  • Regularly inspect the workplace and ensure it is in safe condition. This includes regularly inspecting and ensuring tools and equipment are in a safe condition and are used properly.
  • Seek assistance when they don’t have the skill, physical ability, or knowledge to safely carry out a task.
  • Know their personal limitation and report immediately to supervisors any conditions that may prevent performing work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
  • Stop to identify conditions that could cause an injury or harm to the environment and correct the situation or report it to a supervisor.
  • Watch out for the safety of co-workers and anyone in the processing area.
  • Actively participate in incident investigations, health, safety and environmental programs, activities, audits, and industrial hygiene studies as required.
  • Maintain the required level of housekeeping.
  • Deliver hands-on and classroom training on relevant topics one equipment operation, processes, and systems in process.
  • Develop, update, and deliver comprehensive training curriculum, lesson plans, and competency assessments.
  • Create high quality technical documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, checklists, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Design and deliver engaging presentations, e-learning modules, and training materials tailored to different audiences (operators, technicians, supervisors)
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through practical assessments, audits, and performance metrics; implement improvements as needed.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts, engineers, and safety teams to keep training materials accurate and current.
  • Provide all task training for equipment used throughout the process plant, both initial training for new employees as well as refresher training for all plant personnel as needed.
    • Manage equipment training records both on paper and in the INX system, including 5000-23 forms.

    A secondary role is to work with and support the Permit to Work Officer and help in the following areas:

    • Ensure that Permit to Work systems and procedures are in place and being compiled with and to provide input on maintenance, contractor, and operator training to ensure understanding and compliance to the site location requirements.
    • Development and maintain the Permit to Work System to ensure minimum effect on production whilst still covering all aspects of safety and environmental control. Ensure that all plant items and isolation points are adequately identified and the isolation registration sheets are available for all plant areas and equipment.
    • Implementation and management of the plant cyanide code, including preparing for the audit process every three years.
    • Management of the gas detection equipment portable (fix and calibrate monitors, PM, records, etc.).
    • Update and manage personnel training records in INX, including 5000-23’s.

    Other responsibilities can include, but are not limited to:

    • Act as a representative when dealing with contractors, and coordinate and manage consultants and resources as needed.
    • Lead ICAM’s for the processing department with safety.
    • Help organize and assess the process risk assessment each year for the plant.
    • Attend trainings/development programs and perform other duties required by the company from time to time.
    • Lead or facilitate training presentations.
    • Identify areas for plant improvement.
    • Support confined space safety, procedures, and compliance processes
    • Facilitate training sessions for new hires (onboarding) and operational/process teams, delivering relevant safety information, best practices, and procedural updates.
    Qualifications
    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience and skills related to plant operations. This includes:
      • Crushing, grinding, flotation, CIL, elution, and mobile support equipment.
      • Working around mills, conveyors, pumps, and chemicals.
    • Minimum of 1 years’ experience in LOTOTO and Permit to Work systems in the mining industry (or similar heavy industrial type industry), including possessing the following:
      • Strong safety background
      • Good understanding of energy types and isolation procedures
    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an equipment trainer, operator trainer, or instructional experience
      • Proven technical writing experience-samples may be requested
      • Demonstrated ability to develop training curriculum, presentations, and instructional materials
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to simplify complex technical concepts

    Physical Requirements
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear, and see.
    • Must be able to work shift work with 12-hour shifts.
    • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) during the workday.
    • Work is in a surface mine plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity.
    • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hart hard, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required.
