Responsibilities
  1. Assist in most aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist, including preparing sterile products and chemotherapy, responsible for controlled substance distribution, and other specialized duties within the pharmacy.
  2. Function in accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

For West Virginia Pharmacy Techs:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. One of the following:
    • Nationally certified (PTCB or EXCPT) AND Registered with the applicable state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician upon hire (except PA).
    • OR Two (2) years of pharmacy technician or healthcare experience AND
      • Be Nationally certified (PTCB or EXCPT) within 15 months of hire.
      • Registered with the state Board of Pharmacy within 15 months of hire (except PA).
      • Registered with the state board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except PA).
  3. Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.

For Maryland Pharmacy Techs:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must be registered upon hire with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy as a Technician OR two years' pharmacy technician experience AND nationally certified (PTCB or EXCPT) within 9 months of hire AND registered with the MD Board of Pharmacy within 9 months of hire.
  3. Must complete job-specific competencies or obtain specialty certification within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree OR post-high school education in a science field OR graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following are general responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned:

  1. Read physicians' orders, prepare and deliver medications, and manage drug supplies for patient care units.
  2. Prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms.
  3. Understand pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing and dispensing.
  4. Replenish and deliver medications according to schedule.
  5. Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining records.
  6. Manage inventory, replacing outdated or depleted medications.
  7. Label products appropriately.
  8. Perform dosage calculations and initial dose checks.
  9. Prepare and label prepackaged medications and maintain related records.
  10. Maintain inventory and supplies in pharmacy areas.
  11. Answer telephone calls and ensure pharmacy areas are clean and orderly.
  12. Assist in training pharmacy technicians.
  13. Perform sterile preparation of IV medications and maintain the IV room.
  14. Accurately prepare intravenous admixtures using aseptic techniques.
  15. Enter information related to parenteral and injectable products into pharmacy systems.
  16. Manage controlled substances.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to walk, stand, or sit for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, push 50 pounds, and have dexterity for handling and reaching.
