Brief Description
position overview
Reporting to the Vice President, Research Services, the Information Specialist is responsible for all aspects of managing member projects. This includes exercising judgment in determining the nature and extent of research undertaken, responsibility for meeting deadlines and for following up with members as appropriate.
Position Responsibilities
Core responsibilities and tasks include:
- Research and respond to member and staff requests by utilizing a variety of secondary research resources, using research skills to locate the most pertinent materials to satisfy the requestor’s needs.
- When responding to member requests, provide a brief executive summary of the information provided in response.
- Negotiate and interpret member queries with thorough reference interviews.
- Perform a significant public relations role for the Association through constant member contact.
- Develop and maintain the research collection by monitoring the trade press, evaluating and electronically filing reports, recommending studies and publications to be purchased and otherwise organizing data for quick retrieval.
- Develop and maintain internal proprietary databases of research information and project tracking.
- Participate in improving procedures and information retrieval techniques, and in the selection of new technologies to enhance the service. Attend training sessions from database vendors to stay abreast of service updates and enhancements.
- Identify and analyze trends in advertising, media and information management by reading trade and professional journals, monitoring relevant sources and reports, and by participating in professional association activities.
- Assist members in navigating and utilizing the 4As website for maximum member benefit.
- Represent 4As Research by interacting with members to provide education and training to members on maximizing access to the practice area.
- Perform other duties as assigned by 4As ELT or Vice President, Research. Work with other 4As staff on special projects as needed.

- Master’s degree in library science or information studies, or 7+ years equivalent experience in an information center.
- Relevant experience in secondary research, including a thorough knowledge of business reference sources.
- Expertise in performing online research, including licensed professional databases, government and association resources, and the Internet.
- Must be a “team player” who is flexible, energetic, intelligent, and able to function well in a very structured and scheduled environment.
- Ability to juggle several projects at once and remain even-tempered and good-humored in a high-pressure environment.
- Familiarity with information management and classification theory.
- Good verbal and written communications skills, proficiency with common office software, and ability to learn new technologies.
