Job summary

Tarrant County College’s Northwest Campus Learning Commons seeks a Specialist I to deliver front-line customer service and support across library, learning lab, and tutoring functions. Compensation Details: Starting Pay - $37,900

Work Hours: Varies based on department needs; Fall/SpringHours: Monday - Thursday 7:30am - 9:00pm, Friday 7:30am - 5:00pmand Saturday 10:00am - 4:00pm; Summer Hours: Monday - Thursday7:30am - 9:00pm Saturday's and travel to remote sites may be required

Job Summary:

Reporting to the assigned campus leader, this role providesfront-line customer service to students, employees, and the publicat the TCC Learning Commons. This position is responsible forcross-training in multiple areas with the ability to assist withclerical, customer service, learning lab, library, and otherprofessional duties throughout the Learning Commons.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

General and Working Area-Specific Essential PerformanceRequirements*

General
  • Serves as a resource to students, faculty, staff, and thecommunity to enhance learning and engagement while supportingmultiple functions and spaces within the Learning Commons
  • Provides guidance to students, faculty, staff, and the communityregarding available resources and support services
  • Oversees the front desk and assists in the daily operations andadministrative responsibilities of the Learning Commons, includingappointment scheduling, calendar management, and electronic orphone communication
  • Monitors the Learning Commons to ensure user behavior policiesare followed
  • Inventories, orders, and checks in materials and supplies whileensuring that good safety, housekeeping, and security practices arealways followed
Library
  • Serves as a resource for identifying and connecting stakeholderswith sources of information to support learning, research, andengagement
  • Makes resources and other tools available to students, faculty,and staff, including library materials, multimedia equipment,laptops, and other technology, and assists patrons with questionsregarding technology, computer hardware, and software
  • Answers questions and assists with troubleshooting and resolvingtechnical issues related to printers, copiers, and scanners
  • Assists patrons in person, via telephone, and electronic means byanswering their questions or referring them to the appropriateperson, department, or service desk
  • Locates materials including databases and electronic resourcesfor students and faculty
  • Assists with updating and maintaining maker space hardware,software, 3D printers, and other technology including microscopes,iPads, AV equipment, tracking software, calculators, graphicdesign/video editing software, and other related tools
  • Provides check-in and check-out services as well as properlyshelving library materials
  • Assists with maintaining the Library website through contentreview, creation, and maintenance as assigned
Learning Support
  • Provides tutoring assistance to students to enhance learning andincrease academic success, in collaboration with faculty andappropriate supervisor, and adheres to tutoring best practices inface-to-face, synchronous online, and asynchronous onlinemodalities
  • Provides students with appropriate handouts and educationalmaterials as needed
  • Provides academic coaching and mentoring to current students inneed of additional academic support and study strategies
  • Prepares and puts in place equipment scheduled for use duringlaboratory teaching sessions
  • Teaches basic certification, safety, and training coursescovering all lab equipment
  • Prepares and delivers workshops, which may include contentcreation and updating workshop materials
  • Partners with faculty for special events in support ofclasses
  • Assists supervisor in the delivery of academic boot camps
Service Excellence
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, andfollows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of theworksite
  • Completes all required training and professional developmentsessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
  • Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of theCollege
Supervision
  • Works under the general supervision of the assigned campusleader

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of working experiencerelated to the Essential Performance Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
  • College education beyond the minimum requirements by level
  • At least one (1) year's working experience in a college oruniversity level Writing Center related to the EssentialPerformance Requirements
  • At least one (1) year's working experience teaching or tutoringESOL and/or ESL adult learners
  • At least one (1) year's working experience coaching or teachingcollege-level writing and/or reading
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or French, spoken andwritten
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer andpersonal services
  • Skilled in customer service including customer needs assessment,meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customersatisfaction
  • Skilled in active listening including giving full attention towhat other people are saying, taking time to understand the pointsbeing made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interruptingat inappropriate times
  • Ability to apply critical thinking, specifically using logic andreasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternativesolutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • Ability to apply learning strategies by selecting and usingtraining and instructional methods, as well as proceduresappropriate for the situation when learning or teaching newthings
  • Ability to work using a service orientation by actively lookingfor ways to help people
  • Ability to talk to others to convey information effectively
