Job summary

TheLibrary is seeking a Children’s Specialist to coordinate activities for ages 0–11 and support patrons with library services at the town branch. You will teach story times, assist with outreach and program promotion, and help maintain a welcoming environment.

Required are a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience and at least one year of customer service. This is an on-site, full-time position with a strong emphasis on literacy and early learning.

Description

TheLibrary Children’s Specialist coordinates and assists with the planning and presentation of library activities for children aged 0 – 11. The specialist incorporates early literacy learning techniques aligned with the “Every Child Ready to Read” framework. The specialist also provides customer service to patrons including processing new library cards, check-in & check-out of materials, collection of money for fees and other duties as assigned. Teamwork, communication and personal accountability are essential to the success of this position.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Perform library tasks during assigned customer service desk rotations

  • Maintain library shelf materials and keep public areas tidy

  • Assist patrons with standard library services

  • Assist patrons with library computer navigation, troubleshooting library device hardware issues, and introducing digital resources

  • Support staff with opening and closing procedures for both the library branch and outreach vehicles

  • Complete monthly check-in meeting with supervisor

  • Plan and conduct story times and other children’s programming as assigned

  • Engage with Project Outcome data and assessment tools to measure programming impacts and participation

  • Create displays, promotional materials and programming crafts

  • Participate in content creation for media outlets and the PR Librarian as assigned

  • Support staff with back of house library processes including courier, item maintenance, shelf inventory and deselection


Competency

Adept with computer software navigation, customer service, and attention to detail. Ability to understand and apply both District policies and Colorado library laws. Ability to solve practical problems and respond to routine requests.


Requirements

Required education and experience: Bachelor’s Degree, equivalent work experience or completion of apprenticeship. One year of customer service work experience.


Work Environment

Inside support role, with occasional outside assignments. Regular interaction with other staff and the public. Operates puppets, phones, computers and office equipment.


Hours of Work

Hourly, Non-exempt Full-Time


The schedule requires one evening shift per week and one weekend shift per month.

Physical demands

Light physical effort in carrying and shelving books. Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching. Regular delivery of story time programming to children and their caregivers.


Non-essential functions:


  • Support staff in outreach service procedures and providing standard library services during outreach events, including bookmobile operations

  • Transport mail to and from the post office and sort into appropriate inboxes

  • Support other District libraries with youth programming as assigned
    Support parent and classroom orientation visits
