Job description

THIS IS A LONG-TERM SUB POSITION expected to start on 05/27/2025 and end on 06/23/2025. All substitute teachers are hired as per diem subs, starting at the per diem rate. For more information, visit our website.

The BTU Specialist supports students with disabilities in the Multi-Disabilities (MD) Strand and other at-risk students, based on needs collaboratively identified by school leadership and the Office of Special Education (OSE).

Reports to: Principal(s)/Head of School(s) or OSE Program Director, with support from OSE.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide support services tailored to students' needs, as defined collaboratively by school leadership and OSE.
  2. Support individual students, small groups, and entire classes as outlined in IEPs or Service Team Action Plans.
  3. Collaborate with school staff and administrators in planning and service delivery.
  4. Manage cases and liaise with other providers across school, district, and community levels.
  5. Participate in Service and Evaluation Teams.
  6. Offer consultation and professional development to colleagues.

Core Competencies: Using the SSIP Rubric, the following skills are prioritized:

  • Accountability for Student Achievement: Set high goals, assess progress regularly, analyze data, and share insights.
  • Communicating Professional Knowledge: Demonstrate understanding of child development and effective planning.
  • Effective Instruction: Create inclusive, engaging, and adaptable learning environments.
  • Cultural Proficiency: Respect and maintain environments that honor diverse backgrounds.
  • Parent/Family Engagement: Build respectful relationships and communicate clearly with families.
  • Professional Reflection & Collaboration: Reflect on practice, seek feedback, collaborate, and support colleagues.

Qualifications Required:

  • Moderate or Severe Disabilities License from Massachusetts.
  • Experience working with students with special needs, especially in MD settings.
  • Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SEI Endorsement and/or ESL license.
  • Master’s degree in special education or related field.
  • Experience in Boston Public Schools and urban settings.
  • Fluency in BPS official languages such as Spanish, Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali is valued.
