Job Description

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Special Procedures Nurse, on our main Hyde Park campus.

Under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, the RN provides technically complex and high-risk nursing care services to patients, which may include sedation, intravenous infusions, complex procedures (e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catheterization). This may also include specialized monitoring during procedures and recovery phases. The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibilities for their assigned unit.

  • Perform clinical and research procedures efficiently, adhering to proper protocols for sedation.
  • Provide compassionate, empathetic patient care, considering age-specific needs; involve multidisciplinary teams as necessary to support psychological, social, and spiritual needs.
  • Complete accurate patient assessments, documentation, and interpretations; exercise sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention.
  • Recognize urgent patient conditions, initiate life-support interventions, and communicate appropriately with physicians.
  • Maintain nursing equipment and work areas; report malfunctions or housekeeping issues.
  • Keep work areas and equipment neat and clean; manage inventory of supplies.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is available, functional, and restocked as needed, with fiscal responsibility.
  • Interface professionally with patients, families, visitors, and staff; employ AIDET principles; accommodate customer needs whenever possible.
  • Perform required Quality Assurance tests; assist in safe staffing and patient transport within UCMC.

Required Qualifications

  • RN license required; BSN preferred; 5+ years of clinical experience considered in lieu of degree.
  • Current Illinois RN license.
  • Current CPR, ACLS, and PALS certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership or management experience in the specialty area.
  • Experience in a research environment.
  • 2-3 years recent critical care, emergency room, or oncology nursing experience.
  • Additional certification in the specialty area.
