Job summary

The University of Southern California is seeking a Special Procedure Technologist to support radiologists in diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures. You will scrub in, prepare and position patients, troubleshoot equipment, and maintain records and supplies in the imaging department or OR.

You will work with Angio and other modality equipment, practice sterile technique, and participate in after-hours standby.

Job description

The Special Procedure Technologist provides support for the radiologists in the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures, is a technical resource and provides scrub assistance to the radiologist or performing provider in the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic interventional and peripheral vascular procedures in the imaging department or in the OR. The Special Procedures technologist will prepare and perform all interventional and vascular imaging procedures displaying knowledge of exams and equipment; troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions; keep accurate records of all patients, equipment, quality control and maintenance; and maintains appropriate level of supplies.

Essential Duties
  • Organizes, plans and directs activities relating to patients and procedures for their designated area when assigned to do so by the Interventional Lead.
  • Assists physician with invasive procedures (i.e., scrubs in on procedure).
  • Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all specialty equipment within the department (i.e., monitoring, filming, and digital equipment).
  • Prepares and positions patient for special procedure; obtains scout radiographs, sets up procedure trays. Demonstrates correct and adequate anatomic positioning skills and uses markers properly. Procedures are planned and executed considering physiologic and developmental age. Serves pediatric through geriatric patients.
  • Adjusts technical factors in proportion to patient age and body part being examined while minimizing radiation.
  • Assists in training and guidance of technologist cross-training in Angio department in a positive manner.
  • Confirms patient identification by checking name and birthdate.
  • Reviews doctor's order and requisition for physician notes and/or special instructions, reviews with radiologist and patient if necessary, to assure safety and appropriateness.
  • Recognizes emergency situations, initiates code and properly administer aid as needed.
  • Provides radiation protection to patient, staff and self according to prescribed safety standards.
  • Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination to patient and instruments.
  • Records pertinent patient information and completes all paperwork as required and assists in maintaining files. Performs billing functions timely and accurately.
  • Prepares examination for interpretation by radiologist.
  • Keeps special procedure rooms/work stations neat, orderly, and prepared and assures exam room is stocked with appropriate supplies. Assists with ordering and stocking of department supplies and equipment.
  • Required to participate in after hours uncontrolled standby and call back. Position requires the use of a pager while on duty and while on stand by.
  • Willingly performs other related duties, task or project outside immediate work area as assigned or required (i.e., scheduling, transport, clerical) by the Floor Lead Tech., Coordinator, and Department Director.
  • Assist in maintaining an atmosphere of cooperation with other departments, medical staff and fellow employees.
  • Uses the chain of command appropriately to communicate any concerns with the department, co-workers or medical staff.
  • Responsible for work schedule hours if any changes were made.
  • Demonstrates computer science knowledge and principles related to any other modalities (CT, MRI or Angio) and obtains images according to approved protocols.
  • Accepts change as an opportunity for growth, learning and development; adapts to changing procedures and goals in a cooperative and positive manner.
  • Exhibits organizational skills and utilizes time efficiently.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School or equivalent
  • Specialized/technical training Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology Program.
  • 2 years Experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • Must demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Angiography or Cardiac Cath experience.
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Certified Radiologic Technologist (CA DPH)
  • Radiologic Technologist Fluoroscopy Permit (CA DPH)
  • Registered Technologist - R.T. (ARRT)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Advanced ARRT In Vascular or Cardiac or Cardiovascular Radiography.

The hourly rate range for this position is $49.30 - $83.81.
