Job summary

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) seeks a school nurse in a non-exempt, starting hourly wage position. The job centers on providing for educational, personal, and medical needs of students with complex health conditions within a large, diverse district.

Essential duties include medical assessment, coordination of educational plans, medication administration, and emergency response. Candidates should have RN/LPN credentials, CPR/AED, and a nursing degree from an accredited program.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing from NLNAC/CCNE-accredited program.

Responsibilities

• Provide educational, personal, and medical needs for students with complex health needs.
• Assess and intervene for complex health/medical needs (respiratory, seizures, G-tubes, etc.).
• Coordinate day-to-day educational program and medical priorities.
• Administer medications and nursing procedures as delegated.
• Maintain supplies and equipment for the student’s environment.
• Follow MMSD guidelines and emergency protocols; handle emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of a professional educator, school nurse, and/or building administrator, provide for educational, personal, and physical needs of students with complex health needs
• Responsible for assessment and intervention of complex health and medical needs including respiratory status, seizure management, G-tube feedings, positioning in a wheelchair, student’s communication, etc.
• Coordinate day to day educational program, implementing lesson plans and making decisions about medical, educational, and personal priorities
• Responsible for integration efforts on a day to basis
• Provide emergency care as needed
• Administer medications and carry out nursing procedures under the delegation of the school nurse
• Notify appropriate personnel of emergency situations, including parents, physicians, building personnel, and hospitals
• Assist the student in specialized physical education and other related activities
• Maintain, set-up, clean, sort supplies, equipment for the student's physical environment
• Follow all MMSD District and Health Services Guidelines and emergency protocols for students
• Other duties as assigned when the student is not in attendance

• Job requires sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing, bending, reaching and kneeling. (Medical exam required for employees transferring from EA job to NA or SEA job).

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a university or college school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Official transcripts are required for formal employment.
• RN or LPN and CPR/AED certification
• Certification from the Department of Public Instruction as a Special Education Aide
• Prior experience working with children with complex medical conditions
• Prior experience with O2, G-Tubes, diapering, positioning, adaptive wheelchairs
• Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)

Desired Qualifications

Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.

School-based positions are required to be in-person unless otherwise directed by the building principal.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time.

Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning, and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.
