Job summary

Touchstone is seeking a part-time Event Belay Assistant in Pasadena, CA to safely belay and supervise participants at diverse events. You’ll create a welcoming, safety-conscious environment, assist with setup and breakdown, and coordinate with gym staff and organizers.

Prior belay knowledge and a valid Touchstone belay card are preferred. This role offers a flexible schedule and a pathway to growth within Touchstone facilities.

Responsibilities

• Communicate proactively with gym staff to be briefed on events.
• Prep event space and rental equipment.

• Assist participants with proper gear setup.
• Educate participants about Touchstone’s Gym Safety Rules.
• Belay participants or facilitate a climbing session, offering tips and encouragement.
• Assist organizers with event-related tasks.
• Event setup and cleanup.

JOB SUMMARY:

Safely belay and supervise participants and chaperones at events including, but not limited to, kids’ parties, competitions, meetups, and other scheduled group events. Create a welcoming and encouraging space for event participants, and foster a strong culture of safety, etiquette, and community stewardship by educating climbers in an engaging and approachable manner. Assist gym staff and organizers with event setup and breakdown.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Communicate proactively with gym staff to be briefed on events
• Prep event space and rental equipment
• Organize event participants after they are checked in at the desk
• Ensure all chaperone and staffing minimums are met
• Assist participants with proper gear setup
• Educate participants about Touchstone’s Gym Safety Rules
• Belay participants or facilitate a bouldering session, offering encouragement and technique tips, keeping them engaged throughout the event
• Assist organizers with various event-related tasks
• Event setup and cleanup

JOB SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the public and children
• Strong communication and public speaking skills
• Detail-oriented and self-motivatedKnows how to belay, has been issued a laminated Touchstone Climbing Belay Agreement Card or equivalent from another climbing gym

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Move hands and arms, at times overhead, grasp a rope with both hands, and maneuver for safety
• Hold the weight of a climber (child or adult) while on belay
• Tolerate significant demands on these physical requirements throughout the entire work shift and under all types of gym conditions

Scheduling Shifts

Part-time position, scheduled in advance. Shifts will primarily, but not exclusively be during weekend afternoons.

Compensation

Starting Pay is $18.57/hour. This is a part-time position, working no more than 29 per week. Front Desk Staff individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to; facility location and type, membership volume, experience, and job/position tenure.
