Nemours Children's Hospital is seeking a Casual Hospital School Teacher to provide educational support to hospitalized children and adolescents in grades K-12. The teacher will adapt instructional materials to meet medical needs and support students’ progress during hospitalization.

The role collaborates with home schools, uses established coursework, and supports IEPs when applicable. Certification in Special Education is preferred, and prior pediatric education experience is valued.

Qualifications

  • Must have teaching certification and experience in pediatrics or hospital education.
  • Experience supporting learners across grade levels is preferred.
  • Strong collaboration with home schools and IEP processes.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and document an individualized education plan for hospitalized students.
  • Assess how each student learns best and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
  • Develop creative teaching activities based on assessments and home-school data.
  • Administer and interpret educational and cognitive assessments as applicable.
  • Evaluate outcomes of in-hospital teaching and progress toward goals.
  • Collaborate with hospital staff, parents and school professionals for post-discharge plans.
  • Participate in IEP planning when applicable.
  • Document services in medical records and maintain teaching statistics for reports.
  • Complete annual continuing education required for certification.
  • Attend staff meetings and supervise volunteers in the school program.

Job description

Nemours Children's Hospital is seeking a Casual Hospital School Teacher to provide educational support to hospitalized children and adolescents in grades K-12. The teacher will adapt and deliver instructional materials to meet the unique needs of patients receiving treatment for acute and chronic illnesses, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, transplants, and other medical conditions. Working closely with students' home schools, the teacher will utilize established coursework and, when applicable, support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to help students maintain academic progress and reach their full learning potential during hospitalization.

This casual position offers flexible scheduling, typically 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., up to five days per week. Hours may vary and could increase or decrease depending on patient enrollment and educational needs. The ideal candidate is a certified teacher with experience supporting learners across grade levels. Special Education certification is preferred.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan, implement and document an individualized plan to continue the education of hospitalized children who are patients of AIDHC rehabilitation unit or admitted into the Comprehensive Outpatient Program (CORP). Support needs outside of the rehabilitation program as needed.
  • Assess how each student learns best and adapt teaching methods to fit unique learning need.
  • Develop and plan creative teaching and learning activities based upon individual assessment and home school district instructional information.
  • Administer and interpret diagnostic educational and cognitive aptitude tests, if applicable.
  • Evaluate and summarize outcomes of school based teaching methods.
  • Work closely with hospital staff, parents and school professionals to plan educational services provided to students post-discharge. Consulting with general education teachers on an as needed basis.
  • Participate in planning and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP), if applicable
  • Document in Medical Record services provided to patients.
  • Complete annual continuing education necessary for obtained certification(s).
  • Maintains personal organization of teaching statistics for monthly reports.
  • Participates in staff functions, i.e. staff meetings and huddles, when available.
  • Supervises volunteers in the school program
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or Special Education, or related instructional field of study required
  • Delaware Teaching License and certification in Special Education required
  • Preferred Specialty certifications in field of study, i.e. foreign language, math, traumatic brain injury, etc.
  • A minimum of 3 years in management within a pediatric population is desired
