About the Special Education Position:

Academics West is seeking Special Education Teachers for our Lower and Middle School. Teachers will deliver instruction aligned with student IEPs and NYS Common Core guidelines. The ideal candidate is energetic, motivated, and passionate about supporting children with learning and emotional challenges.

The primary role is to educate using current pedagogical methods. Teachers will collaborate with clinicians to develop classroom management plans and model the Academics West mission. Training in our CIA model will be provided. Teachers report to the Associate Director of Education.

About Us: Located in Lincoln Center-NYC, Academics West is a college preparatory program serving up to 80 students from K-12 with social-emotional or learning differences. Our small ratios enable intensive support, leading to positive outcomes. Our CIA approach integrates clinical and academic strategies to support student growth.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement lesson plans tailored to student needs.
  2. Apply consistent classroom management techniques.
  3. Collaborate with clinicians to support student strategies.
  4. Analyze student data to inform instruction.
  5. Utilize CPI strategies for de-escalation when needed.
  6. Engage with potential new students during trial days.
  7. Write bi-weekly progress reports for students.
  8. Understand each student’s learning profile.
  9. Participate in IEP meetings and provide documentation.
  10. Attend staff and student meetings and PD days.
  11. Monitor student progress throughout the year.
  12. Supervise assigned Teaching Assistant.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Special Education
  • 1-3+ years of experience with students with special needs
  • NY State or equivalent certification in Special Education
  • Preferred: behavior management training (CPI or similar)
