  • SC Teaching Certificate in special education
  • After offer is accepted, satisfactory background check as required by state law and the South Carolina Department of Education

Position Specifics

The Special Education Teacher serves students in all grades requiring special education services or who require universal, targeted, and or intensive intervention. He or she will demonstrate knowledge of special education student needs within general education and special education settings, ensure the proper services and support for students who need supplemental programming, and ensure the school is in compliance with state and federal laws. The Special Education Teacher is accountable to the headmaster and will take significant direction from the Student Services Director.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the academic integrity of the School by overseeing the appropriateness of modifications and accommodations for students in specialized programming
  • Demonstrate effective case management of students
  • Assess and provide research-based intervention to students with a suspected learning disability.
  • Work collaboratively to design IEPs that support academic growth and positive social interactions for learning to promote educational access
  • Provide services consistent with Ascent Classical Academies’ content-rich curriculum
  • Oversee the education of students with IEPs, 504s, or MTSS.
  • Assist and supervise general education teachers to meet individual educational goals for students with IEPs and 504 Plans.
  • Maintain consistent communication with teachers, parents, Headmaster, Student Services Director or Coordinator as needed.
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Create a safe classroom environment for all students to learn and reach their fullest potential.
  • Create thoughtful and well-planned lessons while adhering to the curriculum
  • Maintain an orderly classroom
  • Provide timely and meaningful evaluation/correction of student work
  • Engage students utilizing the Socratic method
  • Lead students through intelligence, charisma, humor, moral integrity, and example
  • Perform additional assigned campus duties
  • Follow school policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of students
  • Provide reasonable assistance to students in need of individual help; assist students to make-up work after approved absences
  • Communicate regularly and as needed with parents
  • Attend special school events (e.g., information sessions, concerts, plays, presentations)
  • Attend all staff meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Support and enforce the school dress and behavior codes and make reasonable efforts to promote the orderly behavior of all students
  • Evaluate and document the student’s daily work, keep gradebook updated, monitor and inform parents of any deficiencies, and prepare the grade reports
  • Attend and participate in review meetings with the Headmaster/designate
  • Pursue excellence in teaching and continue to develop knowledge of the great ideas and works of Western Civilization
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance. Maintain professional appearance and adhere to relevant health and safety procedures
