About the Role

The Special Education Teacher & Academic Intervention Teacher provides specialized instruction and targeted academic intervention for students with disabilities and students requiring additional academic support.

Working closely with the Principal, Instructional Assistant Principal, Director of Special Education, Literacy Coach, classroom teachers, and related service providers, you will deliver high-quality Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), implement evidence-based intervention programs, monitor student progress, and help strengthen inclusive instructional practices across the school.

Deliver Exceptional Instruction
  • Provide high-quality Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Deliver intensive small-group and individualized intervention in literacy and mathematics using research-based instructional practices.
  • Implement structured literacy approaches grounded in the Science of Reading through intervention programs such as Wilson Fundations® Intervention, Wilson Reading System®, Orton-Gillingham, SPIRE, Heggerty, and other evidence-based intervention programs.
  • Differentiate instruction while maintaining rigorous academic expectations for every learner.
  • Align intervention instruction with Brooklyn Charter School’s High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) to ensure consistency between intervention and core instruction.
  • Utilize diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment data to monitor student growth and adjust instruction.
  • Create engaging, inclusive learning environments where students build confidence, independence, and resilience.
Lead Academic Intervention
  • Implement Tier II and Tier III interventions based on student performance data.
  • Administer diagnostic assessments and progress-monitoring tools to evaluate student growth.
  • Collaborate with instructional leaders to design, implement, and refine intervention plans.
  • Maintain accurate intervention records and student achievement data.
  • Participate in Multi-Tiered Support Services (MTSS) cycles for grade K-5, Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings for students with IEPs, and instructional data meetings.
  • Use student data to make instructional recommendations that accelerate academic achievement.
Ensure Compliance & Student Success
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) as required.
  • Write measurable annual goals and monitor student progress toward mastery.
  • Conduct educational assessments and contribute to evaluation reports when requested and required.
  • Maintain compliance with IDEA, Section 504, New York State regulations, and school policies.
  • Partner with families throughout the IEP process and participate in CSE meetings and parent conferences.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Special Education preferred.
  • Valid New York State Special Education Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of successful experience teaching students with disabilities in an elementary school setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), differentiated instruction, inclusive instructional practices, and evidence-based interventions.
  • Strong understanding of elementary literacy and mathematics instruction.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Demonstrated experience implementing structured literacy and mathematics intervention programs.
  • Experience with intervention programs such as Wilson Fundations® Intervention, Wilson Reading System®, Orton-Gillingham, SPIRE, Heggerty, or other research-based intervention programs.
  • Ability to administer diagnostic assessments, analyze progress-monitoring data, and use data to drive instructional decisions.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Preferred
  • Experience implementing High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM).
  • Strong understanding of the Science of Reading and structured literacy instruction.
  • Experience with MTSS and inclusive instructional models
  • Experience using educational assessment platforms and student information systems.
  • Experience collaborating with general education teachers to strengthen inclusive instructional practices.
