SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER (Gr. 3,4,5)
MADISON SCHOOL
STEP/SALARY: BA - 6TH YEAR / $50,825 - $105,070


The Special Education teacher is responsible for developing plans for students, managing the classroom environment, providing students with instruction, and assessing students' knowledge, needs, abilities and progress. Responsible when appropriate, for planning and producing presentations which exhibit student work, talent, and/or athletic skills. The Special Education teacher assumes responsibility for the development of the student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) and consults with necessary school personnel to provide appropriate modifications and accommodations as mandated by the student's IEP.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates comprehensive and current knowledge of subject taught.
  1. Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development as it relates to the learning/teaching process.
  2. Demonstrates an awareness and respect for diversity of cultural backgrounds and lifestyles.
  3. Identifies and sequences goals, objectives, strategies, and assessments, which provide for individual differences.
  4. Plans and implements the elements of an effective lesson design and develops lesson plans, which incorporate technology and instructional aids appropriate for instruction.
  5. Aligns assessment with instructional objectives on the basis of the formative assessment.
  6. Monitors student progress and adjusts instruction on the basis of student questions and performance.
  7. Communicates with students both individually and collectively about their needs and progress.
  8. Maintains high expectations for student learning and behavior.
  9. Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment by consistently implementing routines, transitions, and procedures.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge of national, state, and local standards.
  11. Proficient and consistent with use of data to inform instruction.
  12. Develops and maintains systems for keeping group and individual records.
  13. Establishes rapport and fosters positive reinforcement.
  14. We need someone who has an interest in vocational training and taking 10-12 students out to work daily and enjoys working with Intellectually Disabled students in a vocational setting.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Connecticut teaching certification (165)Comprehensive Special EducationPK-12; master's degree preferred.
  1. Three years' successful teaching experience in an urban setting preferred.
  2. Experience in the use of educational technology.
  3. Demonstrates responsibility for self-growth, professional improvement, ongoing self-reflection or self-evaluation.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.


Salary will be in accordance with the BEA contract salary schedule.
