Job Title: Elementary Special Education Teacher (Severely Profound Self Contained preferred)

Reports To: Principal and Director of Special Education

Site: Sequoyah Elementary

Qualifications
  • Credentials: State Certificate to teach in specific position; Certification in specialized field of special education: Mild/Moderate, Severe/Profound, or categorical certification areas.
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Training or Experience Required: Successful prior teaching experience in Special Education is a plus.
Job Summary

Performs skilled/professional-level tasks under limited supervision to provide children/students with appropriate teaching techniques and environment for learning. Provides physical, emotional, and psychological enrichment tailored to students' needs, aiming for mainstreaming when possible. Establishes lesson plans, grades, and meets curriculum objectives to enhance self-esteem and personal growth. Collaborates with parents and staff to improve learner outcomes. Uses discretion, ingenuity, and independent judgment due to job challenges. Assists with basic hygiene and daily functions for students with severe needs.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • CPR and first aid training preferred for those working with students with Severe/Profound disabilities; behavioral management training is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of State policies regarding Special Education; ability to develop and interact with IEPs.
  • Effective communication skills (oral, written, business).
  • Ability to interpret and explain information clearly and maintain confidentiality.
Essential Job Functions
  • Develops and translates lesson plans and IEPs into individualized learning experiences.
  • Establishes classroom behavior standards and implements behavior intervention plans.
  • Evaluates student progress, maintains records, and communicates with parents and staff.
  • Creates an engaging learning environment with displays and interest centers.
  • Maintains professional competence through ongoing education.
  • Requisitions instructional materials and supervises students as needed.
  • Administers standardized tests and participates in curriculum development and committees.
Other Performance Measures
  • Knowledge of subject matter and effective assistance to students with special concerns.
  • Establishment of clear guidelines and encouragement of effective learning.
  • Monitoring of student progress and maintaining discipline.
  • Contributing to district programs and continuous personal development.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to communicate via telephone and move around various sites.
  • Ability to perform duties involving physical assistance and handling potentially violent students.
  • Follow district procedures for crisis intervention and safety.
Terms of Employment

In accordance with negotiated contract and state law; salary to be established by the Board; 182-day contract.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated per Shawnee Board Policy.
