JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is a 1.0 FTE located at Syphax Education Center - Special Education . The Interim Alternative Education Program (IAEP) is designed to meet the immediate instructional, behavioral and emotional needs of Special Education high school students. Students who attend the program have been removed from their home school due to APS violations involving weapons, drugs and serious physical assaults. Students eligible for the 45-Day Program have emotional, learning and/or behavioral difficulties, which require an interim change in their academic placement. Students are provided a restricted environment, individualized and group academic instruction, social-emotional learning skills and close supervision and monitoring. The goal is to continue students’ academic instruction while increasing skills in areas related to social awareness, self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making and relationships skills. The 45 day staff embraces principles related to differentiating instruction, ensuring student’s safety, developing positive home-school partnerships, building positive student relationships based on mutual trust, identifying and building on the strengths of all students and assisting students in setting short and long term goals. RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead instruction that focuses on strengthening the academic ability and achievement of students. Plan instruction ensuring the curriculum reflects county guidelines, the Virginia Standards of Learning, the student’s current IEP, and staffs’ recommendations. Consistently collaborate with the students’ home school. Provide a learning environment that maintains high expectations and meets the diverse learning needs of all students. Design a curriculum that encourages critical thinking, problem solving, active learning, and collaborative learning. Report grades to the home school at the interim period, the end of the grading period and at the end of the 45-Day Placement. Report daily attendance to the home school. Regularly communicate with stakeholders (i.e., parents, homeschool, parole officer, etc.). Maintain high academic and behavioral expectations for all students and students are supported in achieving those expectations. Lead mid-point and end-point meetings discussing student’s progress and needs grounded in data. EXPERIENCE: Teaching experience in the above mentioned areas. Knowledge of best instructional practices. Ability to integrate technology. Experience in educational and instructional leadership. QUALIFICATIONS: Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure. Special Education endorsement. Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education, or in any other content area, is preferred but not required.
