JOB DESCRIPTION
SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Essex North Shore is seeking a Special Education Teacher to join the department for the 2026-2027 school year.

Licensed in Moderate Disabilities required.

CORI, SAFIS, and SORI required.

Bilingual preferred.

REPORTS TO

Director of Special Education

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum and Instruction
  1. Facilitate instruction, in conjunction with the general education teacher, to meet the needs of students with disabilities, and provide access to the general education curriculum.
  2. Document student performance, student behavior, and student achievement within the general education setting.
  3. Responsible for a caseload of up to 25 special education students.
  4. Provides review and reinforcement of new concepts; supports students in the completion of their assigned tasks.
  5. Collaborate regarding classroom accommodations, modifications, teaching strategies, and assessments.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of students’ IEPs, as well as the accommodations and modifications necessary for student success.
  7. Develops resources for students, such as word banks, graphic organizers, and copies of class notes.
  8. Modify assignments, tests, and quizzes as required.
  9. Participates as a member of Special Education Team meetings; develops IEPs, including goals for each student.
  10. Complete academic achievement testing evaluations for students; write reports of findings.
  11. Maintains documentation, including student performance, behavior, progress data, notation of student absences/tardies, and conversations with teachers.
  12. Provide academic support outside of the general education classroom, as assigned.
  13. Provide for individual or small-group testing.
  14. Assist students to utilize organizational systems.
Communication/Collaboration
  1. Communicate regularly with special education Liaisons, Team Chairs, classroom teachers, parents, and students.
  2. Respond to any correspondence, both oral and written, that comes from a parent or guardian.
  3. Speaks with teachers/Liaisons when concerns arise regarding a student’s performance or behavior.
  4. Records students’ behavior, if requested by a teacher and/or behavior plan.
  5. Participates in conferences and meetings when appropriate; contributes observations and ideas.
  6. Accept additional responsibilities as may be required under the direction of the Director of Special Education.
