Job description

Birchtree supports individuals with autism and other diverse abilities by providing personalized education and outreach programs that promote inclusion, independence, and holistic growth. Our Special Education Teacher helps ensure that Birchtree’s program maintains a standard of excellence in special education. Special Education Teachers ensure compliance with the implementation of their assigned students’ IEPs and individualized educational programming.

Responsibilities:

• Plans and implements specially designed instruction, as documented in the individual education plans for their assigned students
• Creates materials
• Creates and monitors data collection systems specific to mastery criteria
• Analyzes data for progress monitoring and reporting
• Implements curricular materials and resources that are appropriate to the educational programming for Birchtree students
• Supervises implementation of academic programming in the classroom by consulting with classroom staff, modeling one-to-one instruction, and facilitating small group instructional sessions
• Supports Special Education Coordinators with the formal and informal assessment of academic skills including required state and alternative assessments for assigned students
• Develops theme-based units
• Attends and actively participates in all staff, management, and clinical management meetings and other meetings or trainings as required
• Accompanies and sometimes drives student(s) on trips in the community
• Independently manages specific classroom or school-wide projects
• Supports Special Education Coordinators with creating and facilitating staff development trainings

Qualifications:

• Bachelor degree (or higher), or significant active progress in a degree program in Special Education
• New Hampshire Department of Education Special Education Certification or a statement of eligibility
• Experience in teaching individuals with autism preferred
• Basic computer literacy
• Excellent communication skills (written and spoken)
• Comprehensive fluency with varied and appropriate reading and/or math curricular resources

To perform essential functions of the job, must be physically capable of standing, stretching, bending, walking, running, and lifting/transporting a minimum of 50 lbs. Must be capable of moving and thinking quickly under stressful situations and able to function in a fast-paced environment.
