Job summary

St. Clair County School System is seeking a Special Education Teacher to evaluate students, determine eligibility, and develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). The role reports to the Principal and Special Education Coordinator and requires Alabama certification in special education.

Exempt/9-month terms apply per district policy. The teacher will lead inclusive practices, use data to drive instruction, and collaborate with educators, parents, and administrators to support student success

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in special education and/or collaborative.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development.
  • Good public relations skills.
  • Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students.
  • Must meet suitability criteria under Alabama Child Protection Act.
  • Knowledge of education technology and assist in instructional practices.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills across multiple settings.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and diverse groups.
  • Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in school improvement processes and accountability reports.
  • Performs other duties as directed by Principal and Special Education.

TITLE: Special Education Teacher

JOB GOAL: To accurately evaluate and determine eligibility for students referred to special education and develop and implement appropriate Individualized Education Plans for students determined to be eligible for special education services.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Principal and the Special Education Coordinator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in special education and/or collaborative
  3. Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development
  4. Good public relations skills
  5. Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students
  6. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  7. Knowledge of and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology and assist in instructional practices
  8. Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple
  9. Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.

  7. Develops lesson plans to meet school system’s goals using Alabama State Course(s) of Study and/or Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards (when applicable).
  8. As an inclusion teacher, collaborates with general education teachers to plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities to help ensure that each student reaches maximum educational
  9. As small group setting teacher, plans and employs a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities utilizing Extended Standards and Alabama Alternate Assessment (AAA) goals to ensure that each student reaches maximum educational
  10. Manages the behavior of learners in the classroom and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the
  11. Implements and updates the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) as
  12. Actively participates and works with school personnel and other IEP team members in the selection of curriculum goals, specialized equipment, and other instructional materials, to provide the student with maximum learning opportunities.
  13. Documents student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and progress
  14. Follows rules, guidelines, and procedures of Section 504 and IDEA
  15. Effectively implements special education processes such as eligibility, IEP, FBA, BIP, manifestation determination,
  16. Maintains student records and submits required reports and data according to established protocols and time
  17. Participates in Managing Crisis Safely (MCS) training as requested and approved by the Central Office special education
  18. Collaborates with the Operations Director, local school administration, and counselors in identifying maintenance
  19. Collaborates with local school administration and counselors on matters related to student discipline, Virtual School, student attendance, RYAS, court referrals, hearings, bullying/harassment concerns, and any other school
  20. Collaborates with teachers, local school administration, and counselors on matters related to special education, IEPs, FBAs, BIPs, disciplining students in special education, gifted education, accommodations/modifications to the curriculum, and all other items that may fall under special/gifted
  1. Collaborates with school bookkeeper on matters related to finance, purchase orders, receipting monies, budgets, purchasing, and all other items that may fall under the finance department
  2. Collaborates with the Technology Director, local school administration, and counselors on matters related to technology; including purchasing, deployment, repairs, and all other items that may fall under the Technology Director’s supervision.
  3. Supervises and instructs students according to school system policies and best practices.
  4. Supervises mentees and student teachers as
  5. Communicates, through verbal or written/electronic correspondence, with parents/guardians about student progress, concerns, and academic achievement.
  6. Collaborates with local school administration and counselors on ongoing assessments to monitor student progress, interprets and uses data for instructional planning and teaching, and program
  7. Collaborates with local school administration and counselors to provide appropriate safety procedures in accordance with state and local
  8. Participates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans.
  9. Demonstrates high-expectations for self and for students, and creates an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and
  10. Participates in the student and program evaluation process using state and locally approved evaluation
  11. Demonstrates initiative to improve job performance and in areas of
  12. Meets with various stakeholders to communicate and develop partnerships to benefit the school and
  13. Communicates to local school administration about upcoming events and school activities pertaining to the school
  14. Manages the behavior of learning in the classroom and participates in the management of students in other areas of the school and school
  15. Supervises extra-curricular activities as
  16. Supervises morning, afternoon, detention, etc. as

  18. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive
  19. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school

  23. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  24. Attends local meetings, workshops, and state meetings for professional development.
  25. Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal and/or Special Education

SALARY: Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 month

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
