Job summary

Sioux Falls School District is seeking a Special Education Support Professional at George McGovern Middle School to assist in implementing individualized plans and supporting students with behavioral needs under the guidance of certified staff.

This position supports students 1:1 and in small groups, and helps with instructional materials, supervision, and daily living tasks. A positive, team‑oriented approach is essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Two years of post high school education or pass a SD-approved test for designated Education Assistant positions.
• At least one year of work experience in a role requiring interpersonal interaction and supporting students with social, emotional, and behavior needs.
• Requires ability to perform physical tasks and assist with students as described in the essential duties.
• Experience with behavior management.
• Understanding of confidential handling of student information and records.

Responsibilities

• Escorts students to transportation and other areas of the building.
• Provides personal care to students with special daily living needs.
• Reviews and practices skills taught by teachers with students 1:1 and in small groups.
• Works with students in schools and on community outings.
• Prepares instructional materials as directed by teachers.
• Reinforces instructional and behavioral objectives.
• Maintains student records and related clerical tasks.
• Assists with supervision during recess, lunch, and playground.
• Maintains confidentiality of students and families.
• Reinforces instructional and behavioral objectives for children.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION LEVEL:

Two years of post high school education or higher, or be able to pass a standardized test approved by the state of South Dakota, for designated Education Assistant positions..

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

At least one year of work experience in a position requiring interpersonal interaction skills and knowledge of strategies to support students with social, emotional, and behavior needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires constant hand-eye and mind-eye coordination, hearing, frequent bending over, crouching, reaching, removing, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, threading, turning and walking. Frequent carrying, grasping, holding, lifting, opening, pulling, unfolding and unlocking are also required. Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Experience with behavior management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES

1. Escorts students to transportation and other areas of the building.
2. As needed provides personal care to students with special daily living needs (e.g., toileting, feeding, physical management).
3. Provides review and practice of skills taught by a teacher with students 1:1 and in small groups in special education classroom and/or regular classroom.
4. Works with students in schools and on community outings.
5. Prepares instructional materials as directed/selected by teacher.
6. Reinforces instructional/behavioral objectives.
7. Provides clerical assistance to maintaining student records (charting, assignments, attendance, data for progress notes).
8. Assists with the supervision of students during recess, lunchroom, and on the playground.
9. Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families.
10. Reinforces instructional and behavioral objectives for children.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

PAY INFORMATION

Starting at $18.42 per hour + $1,000 sign-on bonus

Pay Day: Last working day of each month, based on the payroll cutoff schedule.

Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch

0.875 FTE, 35 hours per week, 9 months
