Job summary

Hood River County School District is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional to support students with academic and social needs in a 6-hour/day role. You will implement district-approved curriculum, document progress, and help create a safe, inclusive learning environment.

Responsibilities include communicating with parents, recording progress, assisting teachers, coordinating with staff and community partners, and supervising students in class, lunch, and transitions.

Qualifications

  • Associates’ Degree or 72 college credits transferable to a four-year degree.
  • CBEST or PRAXIS Paraprofessional exam may substitute degree requirements.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
  • Experience with students with special needs is preferred.

Job description

Job Purpose Statement:

The job of Special Education Paraprofessional is done for the purpose of facilitating student success in academic and interpersonal skills through independently implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of students; providing a safe and optimal learning environment, and providing direct feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, representing the district as needed in special education meetings, and other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Essential duties of this position include the following.

  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvements and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses and records student achievement for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Assists teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
GENERAL PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Work effectively with and respond to people from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean and appropriate manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • Maintains regular and appropriate attendance and is on time for assignment(s) for the purpose of meeting the needs of the students and the district.
  • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
  • Follow all district policies, work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague or district patron.
  • Develop job skills necessary to meet changes in the position.
  • Meet applicable district physical ability/health and safety guidelines for the position.
Job Requirements – Minimum Qualifications:
  • Prior job related experience - working with secondary-level students, school staff and families.
  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.
  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods and state curriculum framework.
  • Knowledge of principles of child development and instructional processes. Strong Reading and Math skills.
  • Perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks.
  • Ability to use computer technology - especially Google Suite and Gmail.
  • Ability to accurately maintain records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and other school personnel.
  • Meet schedule and deadlines.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
Experience:

Prior experience supporting and working with students with special needs and behavior support.

Education:

Associates’ Degree in subject related to the position or 72 college credits transferable to a four year college degree program; in lieu of the degree or credit requirement, can provide a passing score on the CBEST or the PRAXIS Paraprofessional Assessment exam.

Required testing:

Thehourly payrange for this position for 2025/26 school year will be $18.24 to $21.24/hour. Hood River County School District provides a comprehensive benefits package, and includes district-paid contributions to a retirement account. Classified employees who pass the District's English/Spanish bilingual test will earn an additional 5% hourly increase.
