Job summary

Legal Aid of West Virginia Inc. is seeking a dedicated FAST Education Advocate based in Charleston, WV. The role focuses on providing advocacy for families of students with disabilities, guiding parents through the education system, and delivering trainings on special education law.

You will work with FAST attorneys and partners to ensure families access appropriate services and resolve disputes with schools, while building resources for the community.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree is required.
• Experience advocating for students or children with disabilities preferred.
• Knowledge of federal/state special education and civil rights laws preferred.
• Strong advocacy and written/oral communication skills required.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct representation, advice, and outreach to parents or guardians of children with disabilities.
• Navigate families through the educational system and access resources for their child’s needs.
• Inform parents of their child’s educational rights and ensure access to special educational services.
• Assist families in negotiating and resolving disputes with the school district.
• Address school noncompliance with state and federal code as needed.
• Facilitate trainings and presentations on special education law for families and professionals.
• Create informational resources for parents or community members.
• Represent families in accordance with funding requirements and organizational priorities.
