Position Details

Title: Special Education - Paraprofessional

Location: Kingsley Junior High School (KJHS)

Department: Building Personnel

Reports to: Principal/Assistant Principal

Classification: FLSA Non-Exempt, FTE 1.0

Job Summary

This position works closely with students in a general education classroom who have learning disabilities, autism, or mild behavioral challenges, providing the support they need to benefit from the District's special education program.

Duties
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations as needed.
  • Present subject matter to students under teacher guidance using lectures, discussions, or supervised role‑playing methods.
  • Establish a supportive and respectful relationship with students without fostering intense emotional involvement.
  • Serve as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team when requested.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, gymnasiums, and on field trips.
  • Conduct demonstrations to teach skills such as sports, dancing, and handicrafts.
  • Distribute teaching materials including textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils.
  • Distribute tests and homework assignments, collecting completed work.
  • Enforce school policies and rules governing students.
  • Grade homework and tests, compute and record results using answer sheets or electronic marking devices.
  • Complete required reports on time.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior using behavior modification and positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Assist students with multiple physical, mental, and developmental disabilities.
  • Use adaptive equipment such as communication devices, wheelchairs, and adaptive feeding tools.
  • Assist students with self‑care, hygiene, and feeding as necessary.
  • Perform tasks that students cannot do, such as taking notes, handling materials, and holding books.
  • Handle resistive students when required.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in other tasks necessary for maintaining a professional and positive classroom environment, and perform other teacher aide duties as assigned by the teacher, administration, or Board of Education.
Qualifications
  • Registered license with the Regional Office of Education #17 at the time of hire.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for interacting with teachers, support personnel, administrators, and the public.
  • Professional enforcement of school regulations and policies.
  • Collaborative ability to maintain good working relationships with staff and students.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, and push or pull up to 10 lbs.
  • Detail‑oriented and organized.
Certification

Must possess an educator license with stipulations endorsed for paraprofessional educator or professional educator license at the time of hire.

Compensation

Per the 2026‑2027 Teaching Assistant Salary Schedule, the starting pay range is $19.48 – $22.40 per hour and is based upon experience.
