Job summary

Romulus Community Schools is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional to support students with disabilities. Responsibilities include adapting assignments, providing instructional support, and assisting students in a multicultural environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate patience, experience working with children, and a willingness to participate in ongoing training. A high school diploma is required, along with sixty college credit hours or an Associate’s Degree.

POSITION TITLE: Special Education Paraprofessional

DEPARTMENT: Special Education

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

PAY SCHEDULE: As per Collective Bargaining Agreement

EFFECTIVE: Immediate

Qualifications
  • High School Completion.
  • Sixty (60) College Credit Hours or an Associate’s Degree, or have passed the WorkKeys Test (WorkKeys‑prior to June 01, 2017). Replacing the WorkKeys Test, candidates qualify with a Passing Score of 480 on the ETS ParaPro Assessment or Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills (MTTC).
  • Some experience working with children.
  • Patience and interest to enhance teaching and learning opportunities for children / students / young adults.
  • Willingness to participate in and attend in‑service sessions and / or various trainings, as recommended, to improve self and ability to work with students.
  • Experience or training in working with students with emotional impairments, is valuable.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural setting.
Responsibilities
  • Works with Special Education teachers and staff from Regular Education Programs to adapt assignments, assessments, and classroom activities for students with disabilities.
  • Provide instructional support services as identified for the implementation of the IEP.
  • Work cooperatively with teaching staff in preparing and supporting classroom activities.
  • Assist student(s) individually, or in small groups, with academics and behavior modifications; in limited cases assist with self‑care needs.
  • Assist in providing the least restrictive environment for student(s) and assist teacher(s) in implementing educational accommodations, supports and services that will help the child achieve the educational goals that have been established for them.
  • Assist at the bus, with loading and unloading of student(s) who have special needs.
  • Follow universal precautions in providing self‑care to student(s) and to ensure that equipment and / or toys are cleaned / disinfected after each session of use.
  • Timely completion and maintenance of all required forms and electronic records related to student services, for compliance with Federal, State and District reporting requirements and documentation of services provided.

Physical Demands
  • The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds in supplies, which requires bending, stooping and lifting.
  • The employee must use hands and arms to manipulate and feel objects, controls, tools & keyboard.
  • The employee must reach with hands and arms to manipulate objects.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • The employee is required to talk and hear; must have normal vision and hearing with or without aid.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • The employee must be able to move about assigned location during the day. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in addition to walking and running.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office and school environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions.
  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The employee is required to interact with students, staff, parents / guardians, college staff and personnel and occasionally with the public.
  • At times, the employee may be directly responsible for the safety and well‑being of students
