Job summary

Iowa City Community School District Liberty High School in North Liberty, Iowa is seeking a Special Education Paraeducator for a 7-hour day to support students with IEPs. The role reports to the Building Principal and engages in behavior support, instructional assistance, and collaboration with the special education team.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED, with a para certificate or related education preferred, and prior K-12 experience is valued.

Responsibilities

• Participate in training to prevent and manage behavioral challenges and crisis response.
• Support alternate communication devices and ensure access across settings.
• Take part in verbal de-escalation and crisis management training.
• Maintain student documentation, Medicaid logs, and progress monitoring.
• Assist with bus transitions and riding as needed; complete bus rider training.
• Create and maintain positive relationships with the school community, students and staff.
• Attend work promptly and maintain confidentiality.
• Other duties as assigned.

JOB GOALS:

Performs the full range of professional duties including collaboration with school personnel and the special education department, and supports the documented needs of the student. Special Education Paraprofessionals should be self-starters, flexible, and intuitive in supporting the needs of students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in the implementation of student's Individual Education Plans and support in the preparation and organization of instructional materials and equipment. Which may include:
  • The implementation of a Behavior Implementation Plan (BIP)
  • Assist with and/or perform personal care and hygiene activities as necessitated by the needs of the student.
  • Will implement strategies and participate in ongoing training that prevents, minimizes, and manages behavioral challenges with dignity and safety for the student. This may include implementing the strategies and training received in crisis response including physical management as needed and when appropriate.
  • Participating in training and supporting the implementation of alternate communication devices as needed and ensuring access across settings.
• Participate in verbal de-escalation and crisis management training provided by the Iowa City Community School District
• Maintain as requested student documentation, Medicaid logs, and progress monitoring.
• Support in the transition of students on and off the bus, as well as when needed riding the bus to support students based on student needs. All personnel supporting students with individual educational plans should anticipate supporting occasional and up to consistent bus riding and must complete bus rider training (to be provided upon hire).
• Create and maintain positive working relationships with the school community, students, and other employees.
• Attends work on a prompt and regular basis
• Maintain confidentiality
• Other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

175 days + up to 2 additional days of in-service = 177 days. Salary and calendar year to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.

EVALUATION :

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
